What can I plant in my Tiny front garden that practically looks after it's self? It's north facing so it gets a bit of morning sun for maybe 2 hours.

If possible could you show me pics.

Thank you

Pieris, various differences types which all look a bit different. Dead easy to look after, colourful most of the year.

Buy Pieris:

Ferns and heucheras would be my choice.

Hostia. So easy, likes a brief bit of sun but not much. Perennial, comes back in spring and looks lush all summer. Does die in first frost but by then who cares?

Ginkypig · 26/06/2024 20:22

Lupins
grasses. There are loads of different options
ferns (iv got one particular huge one that looks stunning)

these are all plants iv put in that come back every year and only really get watered. then if I can be arsed they get cut back after they have died and once the lupins have seeded.
i have very variable health so the truth is if a plant can’t survive on its own then in my garden it won’t!

lupins are cheap so you can try them anyway but your garden might not get enough sun

hostas are great and perfect for low sun areas.
everyone else seems to have no problem and they do great in their gardens but iv never had much luck with them. Mine are in little pots though and I think if they went in the ground or a planter they’d do much better

Acers can be very good in shade, as can hydrangea.

PonyPatter44 · 26/06/2024 20:31

My front garden faces north as well. It's currently full of lavender bushes that are doing embarrassingly well.

ArcticBells · 26/06/2024 20:42

Perennial geraniums. They flower year after year and low maintenance

Lokshen · 26/06/2024 20:56

I love acers, lavender (just needs a prune after flowering, but you can use the flowers for scented bags etc), hebe (especially the self-topiary kind)

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/06/2024 20:58

Fatsia japonica, beautiful, glossy, tropical leaves, very hardy. White star jasmine. Climbing hydrangea.

Wrong post so removing comment

I was going to say Acers.. I'd love a courtyard full of Acers but our garden is too exposed to the wind and most of it is sunny. Acers hate both wind and sun!
