Inspired by the Waitrose shop and scan thread...

Why does your shopping sometimes get rescanned if you do scan and go but not if you use self checkouts? Surely the latter is an opportunity for stealing too?

Self checkouts are monitored - filmed, the weighing ' unexpected item' scale and personel close by. If they catch you stealing, apparently they go back through all your previous self checkout footage to check it all.

Self scan as you go is different because no one is observing you that closely as you go so you could have half a trolley that is unscanned and stolen.

OperationGoldDawn · 25/06/2024 23:48

does all the films from the self service get stored or is it just live cameras and no data saved ?

AlliumLake · 25/06/2024 23:55

The staff member lurking at the self checkouts isn’t just there to help when your terminal starts meeping about unrecognised objects in the bagging area, you know. They’re checking for thieves.

TapToSkip · 26/06/2024 00:04

The staff at self checkout are usually so run off their feet with people needing help with the shit scanners / bagging areas going wrong, I don’t think they have much time for checking if anyone’s stealing.

GalacticalFarce · 26/06/2024 00:10

Not in Waitrose but the only times I've had to have all my shopping rescanned, I had either forgotten to scan something or it didn't get done properly. How do they know?
And if they know the value of my shop why doesn't that value just come up instead then?
It's been a genuine mistake and it's made me feel like an idiot.

Smidge001 · 26/06/2024 08:06

I hate the waitrose scan and shop because it asks you if everything scanned BEFORE listing up your shopping on the screen. So I don't know if it scanned everything till I see what's there. Pisses me off every time. The Sainsbury's version transfers the shopping across to the machine first, then you can easily spot if you forgot to scan an item and can rescan it before paying.
We're not all trying to get away with it, just sometimes you accidentally forget to scan something but won't realise til you see the list.

They do though and security check and monitor the CCTV as well

If you read reports about this apparently on average they catch 'live' about four people a day per store - obv depending on size of store but a normal larger supermarket.

and don't worry AI facial ID tech will be coming here soon no doubt

Video shows Asda shopper steal £300 item after pretending to use self-service

The woman, along with three other prolific shoplifters, was jailed for stealing more than £1,400 from shops across Doncaster.

this is also an interesting read:

Makes the point that because intentional shop lifters have become extremely competent at stealing via self-checkout, their crimes are almost impossible to identify. As a result, asset protection at big box stores is now less sympathetic to people who did not intend to steal and has begun targeting consumers who legitimately purchased an item when the business eventually realizes they are short on inventory.

So at the end of the day if they are two short on bottles of champagne say, they will rewatch hours of footage to look for people taking them through self check out and far less leeway is given to the people who made a mistake and are innocent.

Lawyer explains why you should avoid using self-checkouts in stores

Even if you can prove you didn't steal anything and get the charges dismissed, the process can be time-consuming and pricey.

If you can’t be sure you can reliably scan all your shopping you should use the manned checkouts tbh, it’s not ok to potentially steal because you can’t use the equipment properly.

GoogleWhacking · 26/06/2024 13:03

I'm not sure about that. I got "quality checked" once (not sure they should call it that, I don't work for them) and I 100% had scanned a bottle of wine. The lady said I hadn't. I had. I know I had as I always check. The price came out the same after she had done a full check too. She was so rude to me!!

I don't mind when they do a random check, but I do mind being told I've not scanned something when I clearly had. That was a one off but I'm still fuming about it months later!! 🤣

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/06/2024 13:23

The lawyer can explain all she wants about self scan, but when there are no manned tills, the choice is limited.

Don't be a dick. Hmm I just press the button to say I haven't been able to scan everything.
I was simply trying to point out that if they actually displayed the contents first (as they do at Sainsburys), it would be in their own interest, as they'd be less likely to get people blindly saying it's all fine when they've unintentionally missed zapping a product.
