Was in shed and saw a big yellow bee/ hornet type insect buzzing around the window.
Looked up saw the above nest type thing in the photos. They are not great quality but there around 2 of them buzzing around it. Was unable to clearer photo of the insects.

Does this look like a nest?

Shit! And typically DH away till Friday.

Shed is to the side of the house around 20 yards away. So I just locked the door.

Can anyone advise?

Crucially do I leave the window open or close in the shed for them ? Thanks

Wasp traps are baited with diluted jam or fruit juice - they aren't attracted to soapy water!

Well mine certainly were! That was the advice I read at the time of my swarm and it worked.

Thsnk you @Gilead, I hope that I didn't come across as 'snippy' - I had no intention of doing so and apologise if it appeared that way

Round here you pay £50 and someone comes to sort it out for you

@PickledMumion, yes, I am in the Southwest too and there are a large number of European hornets around, I agree. But, as a beekeeper, I am obviously being extra vigilant about the incursion of Asian hornets, particularly since there have been confirmed sightings in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall in previous years. Therefore any doubt over identification of species needs to be addressed - it will be taken seriously by DEFRA and beekeeping associations. Dead insects are never as easy to identify as living ones, particularly if they have been treated with an insecticide.

I'd be cautious and get pest control out, it costs £40-60 usually. Nests can contain tens of thousands of wasps/bees/hornets. It looks small but that could mean several hundred of the things. And you don't want to be attacked in a small space.

Go and ask on this group https://www.facebook.com/groups/NHMUKBiodiversity/?ref=share

They will advise as not everything needs to be killed. For example, I posted the about a wasp nest and it was identified as harmless solitary wasps so I'm leaving them be. Check what they are before doing anything (and don't trust pest control, they will always says say to get rid).

@Beekeeper1 Not at all, I gathered from your name that you would know better than I!

As i posted previously, and in support of what @Beekeeper1 is saying, get a photo/video and if necessary report it at the link below for Id. It will be quickly checked. Ideally get the legs in shot as yellow legs are an identifiable feature.

If it is Asian hornet defra or NNSIP teams will come and destroy it for you, and check no other nests around, as it is an invasive species that is trying to be controlled so it doesn't spread.
