HELP...Travel Insurance DS inter-railing in Europe what type of insurance does he need?

DS and a couple of friends are going travelling only for 14 days but across a few countries. Starting in Milan, then heading to France then ending up in Barcelona.

What kind of insurance does he need, any suggestions please?

He needs a single trip policy. He can enter the countries on the policy.

cherryassam · 25/06/2024 20:28

Just get a single trip policy for the whole time he is away covering Europe, making sure every country he is going to cover is actually covered in the policy. I would probably make sure there’s decent cover of personal possessions / gadgets, especially if he’s staying in hostels with shared rooms.

Anything that covers Europe - Trailfinders are good, ds did three weeks inter-railing last summer on Trailfinders insurance. Make sure he also takes an EHIC card or whatever it’s called now.

AnnaMagnani · 25/06/2024 20:31

Single trip as long as every country he goes to is covered.

Spain is often extra.

CornishTeaTime · 25/06/2024 21:16

Ive just done a quote on a comparrison site and its around £20. Excesses are pretty high though

He also needs to consider if he is going to do any extreme sports while he is away. If he wants to do a bungee jump say, that may be extra.

cherryassam · 25/06/2024 21:26

@AnnaMagnani makes an excellent point, check out what activities are and aren’t covered - things like quad bikes / jet skis / scooters can not actually be covered on some policies.

JoJothegerbil · 25/06/2024 21:28

DD went interrailing. We got her backpacker insurance.

CornishTeaTime · 25/06/2024 21:38

No extreme sports....they are walking, hiking seeing the different areas.

Ah back packing is that what he dhould get rather than normal insurance? When I did the quote it asked me for countries and dates

Whats the difference?

Standard travel insurance for a single trip. Different policies have different questions etc. Snowcard might be worth a look or World Nomads.

Also consider a GHIC card (replaces the EHIC). You still need travel insurance but worth having this as well.

CornishTeaTime · 25/06/2024 21:46

Yes he has GHIC Card from last year...lasts 5 years

Ummm he prob just needs single trip then

I was thinking the same. I would probably add cover for any conceivable activity he might decide to do as, even though he might insist he won't need the cover, young people are impulsive and get carried away in the moment. They won't be stopping to consider their insurance cover when everyone else in the group decides to do quad biking/ bungee jumping or other similar risky activities. Better to be paying a few quid extra now than be trying to raise the money to air ambulance him home by GoFundMe when the insurance doesn't cover it.

Good advice everyone

UPDATE
Went with Trailfinders insurance in the end. Covered for literally every single activity/extreme sport they would probably do. Paid a little more but peace of mind and all that!
