Most effective way to keep bedroom cool

Our bedroom is double aspect and gets the sun all day! We need new curtains and maybe to curtain rail or track.
Tell me about the perfect set up.

We have venetian blinds that stay closed most the day. Slats facing upward lets in more light than facing down.
Curtain track in the ceiling so no gaps at all, that was for darkness at night but if you wanted to keep curtains closed in the day it would also help keep heat out.

Other than that window open all night for cooler air in then shut on hot days. A fan for the really hot nights.

If you don’t mind how unsightly it looks, stick something on the outside of the window to stop it heating up. And have the windows open at night and in the early morning, but close them during the day when the sun is on it. I’ve been closing the doors to try to keep the cooler warms cool and contain the heat in the warmer rooms. It’s not too bad now but if it gets much warmer I’m going to sleep downstairs.

Our bedroom gets the sun all day.

Keep windows closed during day until outside temp has dropped (might not be possible this week) then open them.

My last curtains were lined, navy blue, as I thought that would help with the heat and ruinously expensive. Because they were dark they just faded horribly.

I replaced them with ready made M&S curtains and added separate thermal black out linings and a metal track rail from Terry's Fabric. We have a 5 sided bay and could bend and fit it ourselves. Strong enough to hold curtains and linings and the combination keeps things cool.

Obviously in this weather we keep the curtains closed all day.

mathanxiety · 24/06/2024 19:10

Keep all your curtains clpsed all day, upstairs and downstairs, if it gets really hot. No need to do this if it stays under 24 degrees though.

Heat rises, so letting your downstairs heat up during the day will mean hot bedrooms.

At night, open your upstairs windows, keep all doors open for ventilation, and run fans.

Windows and curtains open first thing for the cool morning air

Shut by 9.30 or so - both curtains and windows (double glazing helps a lot as do thick curtains)

If you don’t have thick curtains consider getting some stick on black out blinds for hot weather use only

Open windows and curtains again once it’s cooler outside than in

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/06/2024 19:29

Thermal curtains closed to keep the heat out.

Only open at night if it's significantly cooler outside - urban heat sink pavements, tarmac and block paving will render it pointless. If it's cooler, a fan will help.

But best of all, windows closed, curtains closed and air con.

Has anyone used the darkening curtain poles that are supposed to stop light getting in round the sides.

We have shutters. Shutters and windows closed on the sunny side, switched over as the sun moves round.

hexsnidgett · 25/06/2024 09:39

Do you mean on the outside? That would be great, but we cannot add shutters as the flat is listed.

I've got a ceiling fan with a light, over the bed. It's excellent. It fits in the ceiling light socket.

hexsnidgett · 25/06/2024 17:56

Is the ceiling fan quiet? I haven't nbeen abke to sleep with fan, because I end up having dreams I am in Vietnam!

Yes! Just a soft, slight whirr!

butmumineedit · 25/06/2024 19:23

If you have a attic - then open the hatch so the hot air rises up to the attic rather than the bedrooms , you will be surprised the difference it makes.

You can get special quiet fans to use in bedrooms that you can barely hear at all when they are on. A bit pricier than big standard ones but worth it. Have them in all our bedrooms. Search on Amazon for quiet fans.

My bedroom has windows on three sides. When it is stewing hot, I open windows either end, and close curtains to block the sun.

Plus my garden is full of trees, and we're at the bottom of a valley so the air tends to be a little cooler.

Tarquina · 26/06/2024 05:50

I happen to have the ceiling light fitting immediately above my bed. I bought a combined fan and light on Amazon and if you run it on the lowest setting if it is absolutely silent and can be left on all night if necessary on the hottest days
