Inspired by another thread in this 'ere topic, I was reminded of something my Grandad (born in Derby) used to recite... It went:

'It was a dark and stormy night. Three old men sat in a barn. One said "Joe, tell us a story"... This is it... "It was a dark and stormy night. Three old men..."

Rinse and repeat. Always used to make us laugh as kids in the 1960s

My mind went straight to "It was a dark and stormy night on Plum Street. In the little white house Mrs Bear was putting Sam to bed..."

A story I have to pretend not to enjoy because my 5yo DD doesn't like reading my favourites because then they don't feel like her favourites. Heaven forbid we both like the same book

My mothers version was:
'It was a dark and stormy night, and the skipper said to the mate: "tell us a story". So the mate began...

The trick was for each reiteration to be said in a different way - various accents, factual, foreboding etc

Boney was a warrior is one I half remember.

My grandson stunned me recently he started singing Hitler's only got one ball. He'd been to a first world war reenactment event over half term and somehow picked it up. I hadn't heard it since I was a child. Little boys still find it funny
