Next weeks forecast looks to be between 17 - 19 degrees and showery. But then again who knows . Ive no idea what thickness of jacket might be needed. Choices are - light down padded jacket or windproof/water resistant jacket (no padding )? Or both.

I have only been to places in the north like Flamborough, Saltburn, Whitby etc which are often windy, cold, wet and changeable. I know what I usually need to take. But so far South I don’t know if I’m overdoing it. I’d like to keep clothes to a minimum. Any advice appreciated.

Thin weatherproof layers are best, especially if you're walking. It rains a lot more in the south west than people think it does.

Thanks Menopaused.

Where in Cornwall are you going?

We have had mostly rain although it’s been very close the last few days so go for the windproof/water resistant jacket. I just got drenched walking to my car.

Have fun!

The waterproof one and take a fleece or jumper too.

Papyrophile · 24/06/2024 17:25

The waterproof one! And a cotton/thin sweater for evenings or cooler days. It's not very warm here yet although the next few days promise to be warm and humid.

QueenofTheBorg · 24/06/2024 17:27

sunglasses, sunscreen and a swimming costume AND
a waterproof coat a hat and a scarf

You just never know in Cornwall!

I always take my Barbour wax jacket on a spring/summer holiday. It's not a warm coat (have to wear a fleece under it in winter) but is totally windproof and waterproof - and isn't bulky. And I love the amount of pockets!!

DayIntarnishedarmour · 24/06/2024 17:41

Thank you this is so helpful. We are going to Polzeith. I’m really excited.

will take lots of layers but maybe leave full Yorkshire coast summer kit of gloves, thermal vests and down jacket at home. Next weeks BBCs forecast doesn’t look too promising in terms of warm or dry weather. Dry would be a bonus. Not too bothered about heat.

I'd go with a very thin light shower/waterproof, there's nothing worse than getting sweaty because it's warm and raining. Maybe a hoody or similar for evenings.

Xiaoxiong · 24/06/2024 17:47

Just the windproof/water resistant jacket, and a jumper - this time of year that's all you'll need. Definitely no gloves, down jackets or thermal vests!

Agree with @QueenofTheBorg though - usually I bring wellies and sandals, a raincoat and swimsuit, a woolly jumper and a sundress!!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 24/06/2024 17:50

Hard to pack light for a British summer!

Layers will be you’re friend, unlikely to need a down jacket but definitely waterproof, fleece and things you can layer up!

DayIntarnishedarmour · 24/06/2024 18:04

Thanks yes anywhere in the UK is a tricky place to pack for. I’ll take out the thermals and leave the down jacket at home. May have been too pessimistic .

I'd go for a denim type jacket to keep out any wind chill but not add warmth, and a lightweight waterproof. The coast can be really windy. At the moment it is really humid and hot, but not really sunny hot iykwim. Maybe a jumper or fleece if evenings are chilly.

Exactly! I’ve just been on holiday in Cornwall and I took - and wore - a padded jacket, a sleeveless gilet, a rain mac, a denim jacket, a lightweight kimono and several sleeveless tops with no coat at all. All in the space of 12 days.

Nah, bring those as well.

It can get a bit nippy at night, never mind if there's some shitty weather blowing through.

JDob · 24/06/2024 18:21

It rains in a serious way, but probably won't be cold.

CrushingOnRubies · 24/06/2024 18:21

I live in Cornwall Waterproof not too thick. Layers are best. But yesterday wore waterproof and T-shirt mines quite thick though. A Was still wearing a body warmer last week.

DayIntarnishedarmour · 24/06/2024 18:29

I’m used to serious rain. But not too cold is an improvement on most days I’ve spent by the sea in my part of the country.
