What do you listen to out loud with children in the room?

It’s just DH, DD4 and me.
I’ve realised our home is pretty quiet.
I want to start putting something on in the background once in a while to break things up but the podcasts and audiobooks I listen to privately (in earbuds) are not really child-friendly (Armchair Expert, Shagged Married Annoyed, Parenting Hell etc).

I’m not looking for content aimed at kids. Things for grown ups but ok for little ears.

If you have similarly aged kids, what do you put on in the background for you?

Thank you :)

I just have YouTube on with my music videos playing. He doesn't really watch but he does love music 😁

RedPanda2022 · 24/06/2024 13:26

Radio 4!

Noosnom · 24/06/2024 13:31

Radio 1.
Anything unsuitable for children was kept for my running playlist.

Newscast the podcast. Anything from BBC has warnings before sensitive topics.

We're an Absolute Radio household, DCs (4 primary boys) know all the old rock and indie songs Grin

MidnightPatrol · 24/06/2024 13:38

I listen to Spotify playlists of music I enjoy.

EasterlyDirection · 24/06/2024 13:38

Radio 4 or 5Live, but a lot of the time we had nothing on because I grew up in a house that always had the radio blaring and still crave quiet backgrounds. However I think it's good to have the radio on for DC at times to get them used to hearing what's going on in the world. For music (this is going back a few years) we used to play the Now CDs.

I’ll listen to most things around my kids except grisly murders! But classic audiobooks are lovely to have on. You could choose childrens classics if you wanted to, as lots of adults enjoy them too, even if they are beyond a four year old level. Even those with more adult themes will tend to go over their heads, and if they don’t you can explain in an age appropriate way. Disclaimer - I’m very relaxed about language and adult subjects, and my DC seem well balanced people so far! But do feel free to vet them as I’m sure I’ve misremembered some parts or might let some swear words in. My DC are varying ages so the smaller ones have always had bigger kids stuff to watch or listen to.

Classic childrens we’ve enjoyed on audiobook - Five Children and It, Heidi, Pollyanna, Black Beauty, Treasure Island, Alice in Wonderland, A Little Princess, Lion Witch and Wardrobe, Northern Lights, The Hobbit, The Secret Garden, Tom’s Midnight Garden, 1,001 nights, Ronia the Robbers Daughter, Earthsea quartet, Roald Dahl

More adult books - Dickens, Austen, Brontes, Gaiman, Pratchett.

More factual and podcast stuff - Something rhymes with purple, 1000 of the worst ideas in history, Into the Blue, Oceans Life under water, BBC Earth podcast, Naturebang, how I built this, herstory, horrible histories!

LBC here. My older dc now ask for it in the car over the music radio stations.

Shortfatsuit · 24/06/2024 13:47

My dd, like me, was brought up to the soundtrack of BBC Radio 4. It was a constant presence in my house growing up, and we often have it on in the background at home.

Rawrrawr1 · 24/06/2024 13:51

Radio 2 is on a lot in our house. Surprisingly, Yoto radio ( which i think I like more than him) is actually a great mix of charty stuff and kids songs

MoleOla · 24/06/2024 13:55

Some great suggestions here, thank you everyone!

I might compile a list, give everything a go and see what sticks! :)

BBC radio, go for 1, 2 or 6 if you want popular music, 3 for classical, and 4 or 5 for talk.

No adverts and should all be suitable before the watershed.

If there are shows you particularly love or hate use the sounds app to listen on demand.

blackberryhill · 24/06/2024 15:52

We're a 6Music household here, it's on over breakfast and in the car. Sometimes we'll put on music on Spotify from the big playlist we compiled for our wedding - all upbeat, family-friendly and suitable for a kitchen boogie.

MissKittyFantastico84 · 24/06/2024 16:00

The Rest is Entertainment with Richard Osman and Marina Hyde.

Really engaging and as far as I can tell, little to no swearing or strong adult themes.

GameOfJones · 24/06/2024 16:45

I tend to alternate between LBC and Radio 2. My 7 and 5 year olds now really like Ten to the Top 🤣

AmelieTaylor · 24/06/2024 16:50

I don't because I like it quiet. I don't enjoy background 'noise'

i listen to LBC in the car.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 24/06/2024 16:56

The radio used to always be on when mine were little. Absolute Radio after Heart took over local radio and made it crap.
