Is this something to joke/tease about?

Just wondering if it's normal to tease or make light of a mugging. (One where the victim isn't hurt)

One of DD's friends was mugged one evening and handed over his phone.

When DD told me she was laughing a lot and found it hard to keep a straight face.

Seemed a bit harsh to me. Like you'd never want it to be you.

19

She sounds very immature and lacking in empathy.

It wasn't a fake/awkward laugh she genuinely found it funny.

And yes I was disappointed and shocked at her behaviour

I hope you told her that.

Is she generally quite selfish with a mean streak or is this very out of character?

I don't think she's selfish or mean.

I genuinely think she just found the story funny as a "haha how unfortunate" because get friend was (thankfully) unharmed.

I do think this isn't a laughing matter though.

It sounds like your DD lacks empathy unfortunately.

Catlord · 24/06/2024 19:11

Well, perhaps she needs a reminder that he did the right thing handing his phone over and in the moment he would have had no idea whether they had a weapon so it would have been a scary moment. He might've made light of it to be fair

SallyWD · 24/06/2024 19:23

I don't think anyone would laugh if a girl/woman got mugged but some people seemed to find the assault of males funny.

AtrociousCircumstance · 24/06/2024 19:24

She sounds like a sociopath.

This happened to my housemate at Uni , he was mugged for his phone and came home with a massively fat lip.

Our other housemate and me were unfortunately stoned at the time and we were sympathetic and also completely useless.

Like the police came round and we were pissing ourselves about the house stinking of weed.

We didn't laugh AT him, though. We were off our heads and cared.

goldfinch73514 · 25/06/2024 07:26

Maybe just ask why it's funny. There may be other reasons like she really didn't like him. Or she's shocked. Teens laugh at anything to make them feel in control

AlliumLake · 25/06/2024 07:38

Ask her exactly what aspect of being robbed of a valuable possession with violence or the threat of violence she finds hilarious? Ask her what she thinks would have happened if her friend had refused to hand over his phone? Ask her what she would do in the same situation, and whether she’d appreciate people thinking it was funny?

Her friend was quite right of course to give the mugger the phone rather than risk being the victim of violence. Someone got their face slashed with a Stanley knife here last year for not doing so, and nearly lost an eye.

You have literally come on to MN and posted evidence of her being selfish and mean.

What a strange post. She sounds horrid.
