Cool but Classic Boy's Name

As the title says really. Something classic ish but slightly different for a boy. Already have a son whose name begins with J so not looking for alliteration.

Some names we initially liked were Austin and Chester but kinda gone off them now.

There was a Peregrine in my infant school though he was known as Perry. Not loving it.

I am a fairly conventional soul so my suggestions may not be to your taste. Classic names that I never seem to hear are:

John
David
Daniel
Matthew
Mark
James
Luke
Peter
Andrew
Jude
Philip
Thomas

Austin and Chester are not really my cup of tea but, if they are yours, do you like Stanley? A boy at my daughter’s nursery was called Stanley and he was a nice little boy.

CruCru · 24/06/2024 10:38

The problem with looking for something “different” is that someone else will do the same thing. I once introduced two set of parents whose sons were both called Atticus. They were a bit muted.

Percy Jackson is probably responsible for the current outbreak of Percys. The books have been around for nearly 20 years so the first readers will be reproducing now.

LOL at the two Atticuses

It’s so pretentious Grin someone I went to school with has just named her son that, and I cringed so hard as I sat next to her in English and I don’t remember her ever being that enthusiastic about TKAM…

CruCru · 24/06/2024 12:31

The name Atticus is okay, it was just that these two sets of parents were sort of upset that someone else had had the same idea. You don't get that with names like David (which, in my part of north London, is a really unusual name).

We know a Percy. He’s two. It’s a cute name and suits him.

Having said that, I think it’s a name like Teddy (we know a couple of those as well). It’s cute while they’re young, but they are going to hate you when they’re teenagers and young men and have to navigate all that entails, while having names that only really suit toddlers.

I knew a couple of people at work who had changed their names once they reached adolescence.

USaYwHatNow · 25/06/2024 19:40

@CruCru Interestingly my dad's and my son's names are both in your first list of suggestions, and my son has my dad's name as his middle name 🤣

My ds is Wilf(red)
The other boys name we had lined up was Thaddeus. Having watched Nanny Mcphee I'm glad we went with Wilfred.

Caspianberg · 25/06/2024 19:50

Evan
Lionel
Tim (Timothy)
Earl

dontpokethemommabear · 25/06/2024 19:52

Gabe - Gabriel
Nate - Nathaniel
Theo - Theodore
Jude - Julian
Fred -Frederick
Zac - Zachary

All cool dude names - you can use the full versions on birth cert in case they need the gravitas in the future but shorten immediately for baby and childhood...

WickWood · 25/06/2024 19:59

We're due a baby boy too and calling him Sebastian/Seb. I'd say it fits the cool but traditional brief!
