Accidentally mixed bleach with Viakal

Hello, I come home to the faint smell of bleach. I go into the kitchen and drink a glass of water and noticed the sink plug was on and yellowish water in the sink. I asked my husband did he put bleach in the sink. He did and it does look clean but then the idiot tells me he first stayed it Viakal limescale remover spray and then poured some bleach. The Viakal said not to mix with bleach. Now I think I will die.
its in my kitchen. He did let it drain when I told him off for messing with cleaning products just to get a sparkly sink. He rinsed it many times and washed it off with cheap washing up liquid. The kitchen window was open but the door wasn’t closed.

what do I do? Help?

You ignore it and get on with your life.

Is this a joke? Rinse it away, you'll be fine.

Nothing. Open the windows.

Well you obviously have to declare a nuclear fallout zone and vacate the country immediately.

Or, failing that, just get on with your life Confused

Okayornot · 23/06/2024 17:38

The reason you don't mix cleaning chemicals is that the combination can produce noxious gases. If that was the case here you would have been coughing, not having a discussion about yellowish water in the sink.
As you are posting on Mumsnet and not running outside for some air I'd say there is nothing to worry about.

downwithmaterialistdogma · 23/06/2024 17:41

I've lost count of the number of times I've gassed myself with cleaning products and bleach. Don't worry, it'll be fine, it's small enclosed spaces that pose the greatest risk if you do this. Just ensure you ventilate the area.

Whyoohwhyohwhyyyy · 23/06/2024 17:42

You'll be fine. I made the stupid mistake of mixing cleaning products once (baby brain) and the fumes instantly made me choke. I'm still here to tell the tale!

This. And just consider if you really need any of those chemicals in your home. I live healthily with them,

It isn't a joke, no. If you breathe in a lot of chlorine gas, it reacts with the fluid in your lungs to make hydrochloric acid.

Yes, but as OP is posting here and not fighting for breath, I think we can assume that hasn't happened.

AmelieTaylor · 23/06/2024 18:02

I used the two together for years before I realised you weren't supposed to!

you'll be fine.

i then
got a Harvey's water Softner and have never needed 101 limescale removers since! Bliss!

GalileoHumpkins · 23/06/2024 18:02

Now I think I will die
Well, you will eventually but probably not from your husband mixing cleaning products.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/06/2024 18:08

You're fine.

He needs to learn some basic science and cleaning skills, though.

VolvoFan · 23/06/2024 18:15

Viakal + bleach = chlorine gas. The fact that your conscious and made a thread about it implies that you're in no danger at all. You'll be fine, just teach your wally of a DH to read instructions.

mixing cleaning products is not a joke, and can cause gases which destroy your lungs, or sometimes can be explosive.

I know that. But the op had said she had rinsed it away, if sufficiently diluted and dealt with then there's no need to get hysterical about it.

Sounds like disaster was averted as you'd certainly know about it if you did create a toxic concoction. He needs to learn to read the precautions info on the back of cleaning products.

Not to the OP, no. It is still worth reminding people about chlorine though, on threads like this one. Especially since so many people buy it at this time of year for garden pools and could be unfamiliar (or careless) with the safety aspect. I used to work in that industry, hence my posts on this thread.

Sonolanona · 24/06/2024 12:42

I've done that too many times to count, as need Viakal for the limescale and then usually use bleach , and it's got mixed. Still here to tell the tale.
It's not ideal but you've rinsed it..it will be fine.
