School vs Job

Keeping this short.

I went through private education, as did my siblings. I’m now in a minimum wage job (which I love) and siblings have low salaries.

Husband went state, has a high salary.

Its not the school that gets you a good job, it’s the individuals desire and interest in a sector.

My DD has SEN issues and I’d never go private. It bankrupted my parents and it 100% wasn’t worth it.

Stop complaining about fees and focus on the bigger issue that education is badly funded.

Who on earth said it was the school that gets people jobs?
You can care about school funding whilst being against VAT policy. Just because I send my child to private doesn't mean I vote Tory or don't care about anyone else.
If you care so much why don't you and your husband choose to contribute more to the government through voluntary tax?

That’s your experience, but different people will have different experiences. What matters is that you have a job that you enjoy. I haven’t had a private school education, but I did go to a selective grammar school. My children and grandchildren were and are state educated.

A desire to work hard and progress is important and perhaps private education encourages that. I don’t know. I don’t think that you can buy your path to intelligence and a good career, but I think you can enhance your opportunities.

You re correct though, that the underfunding of the state education sector as a whole is a disgrace, but that’s not the fault of people who educate their children privately.

Of course private education doesn’t guarantee a highly paid job, I don’t think anyone has ever said it did.

I hope your child thrives in the state sector. If she doesn’t, and you can afford private, I hope you’ll consider it and not write it off due to these pre conceived views.

@lightinthebox I'm pleased your state schools caters for your child with SEN sufficiently. Sadly, not all schools do which is why there are over 100,000 SEN kids in private education. Plus military families, plus those on bursaries and scholarships.
Maybe be a little less judgemental and understand that we aren't 1 homogenous group of people/children, same as children in the state sector aren't 1 homogenous group.

Perhaps you and your siblings are just not very bright or hardworking?

I don't think your family anecdote provides us with enough information to make any firm conclusions on the relative benefits of private education.

lightinthebox · 23/06/2024 14:37

Private education does get your foot in the door of highly paid jobs. Simply ‘knowing the right people’ gets you employment, a person in husband’s company got the job based on their contacts and they were privately educated.

I’m not lazy thank you, my job involves 6am starts and I get minimum of 12,000 steps/day. I also got A* GCSEs and a high 2:1 at university.

We need to focus on fixing our education system for our children, instead of fighting about fees.

Btw we voted for Labour back when we knew it would hit us with higher taxes. It’s the right thing to do.

And that's the point, VAT is smoke and mirrors to hide the fact that Labour aren't going to increase actual funding.
Only elite public schools such as Eton et al offer a "foot in the door" but the majority of private schools aren't public schools, they are independents serving local communities and employing local people. DDs rural school is the largest employer in the town in an area where job prospects are low, they make cuts and it is local people who suffer.
