Has anyone had one of these new NHS Lung screening assessments yet? Ive got one booked on Saturday, was told it would take about an hour, but have no idea what to expect!

It's a ct scan I believe. With a questionnaire first. Are you a smoker?or have ever been. If not I don't think they offer a scan, or at least they don't round here. Just to note if you do get a scan it can show up breast calcifications so ?cancer, aortic aneurysm and cardiac disease as well as lung stuff.

The good news is if it does show cancer it's nearly always at an operable stage. Probably 2-3 years before symptoms might have prompted a diagnosis otherwise.

Please go for it. Not to scaremonger, but my dad went for one purely because he was offered it due to risk factors and was found to have stage 4 cancer, which was symptomless besides an achy leg from where it had metastised to his bones. Luckily it was caught early and whilst he will never be completely clear, he is managing to live a normal life after some chemo. So anyone reading, it may save you too.

Blimey! I thought it would just be one of those breath devices they use to measure lung capacity for asthma sufferers!
I am an ex smoker from 30 years ago. Also, both my parents and my grandfather died of aortic aneurysms so I already get screened for that.

Ah right, no it's a ct scan. Which is reviewed by radiologist and then you are referred on or your gp advised of any needed action.
I've seen outcomes at work. They don't find lots of cancers (so please don't worry about that more than you can help) but what they do find is, like I said, much earlier than most presentations and is therefore potentially curable. Most people get referred with weight loss, cough and coughing up blood - by which time the cancer is not small.
