New driver car insurance recommendations please

Dd has finally (phew!) passed her driving test and I need to get her insured on my mini - so far I’ve had quotes of nearly £3,000 😱. The car is the most basic mini model and is only worth about £6,000. Any recommendations for brokers/companies which won’t mean I have to sell a kidney??

Are you using a price comparison?
Admiral was the best for DS when he passed his test. Dropped by quite a bit after the first year too

Dd is looking at insurance for a 1.4 vauxhall adam , she's been quoted just over £3000 as a new driver. It seems about average.

PuffyFluffin · 22/06/2024 17:10

I'm not sure about insurance on your car, but my 18-year-old has a black box on his car, and he's insured with Insure The Box which is costing £750 this year, which feels like a bargain!

Rowgtfc72 · 22/06/2024 17:20

Dds just informed me 3400 without a black box, 2700 with.

taxguru · 22/06/2024 17:23

We used Admiral multi car policy. Put both my own and DH's car on the same policy and then added our son, from the moment he was 17. Only a hundred or two more for him as a learned, and then once he passed, it was only about £500 extra per year, with him a named driver on both our cars.

Thanks - insure the box with a black box came out slightly less eye watering. It is unbelievably expensive - surely most families are completely priced out of letting their teenagers drive - unfortunately we live in a part of the country where driving is absolutely essential.

Get him/her to take the Pass Plus driving course, it teaches driving in the motorway, at night, in the rain, etc.

It lowers your premium if you have it, especially a new driver.

It really doesn't anymore, made no difference at all to quotes i was getting.

Admiral was best for my DD

KnittedCardi · 22/06/2024 19:01

Get all your cars on a family policy and put both parents on kids car. Both mine and DH's insurance subsequently came down, and DD's was only about £1800 for first year, £1300 second year. Fiat 500 Lounge.

KnittedCardi · 22/06/2024 19:02

Edited: No black box or restrictions. LV insurance.

Bungalowhouseflat · 22/06/2024 19:04

Hastings direct with black box was best for ds. Would have been cheaper with restrictions however he works shifts with nhs so had to go with more expensive quote.

Springwatch123 · 22/06/2024 19:05

Add yourself on the insurance. It brings the price down.

ScoobyDoesnt · 22/06/2024 19:08

Hastings Direct here too for DD, with me on the insurance too.

RedHelenB · 22/06/2024 19:12

Hastings

sausageupanalley · 22/06/2024 19:32

Have you spoken to your insurers about how much it would be to add her onto your insurance if its your car? This worked out way cheaper for us and no black box needed. We paid £600 extra for the year.

Usernamerequired123 · 22/06/2024 19:33

Admiral. I took black box. I've only been driving 6 months. But the journeys are within 4 miles radius.

Pleasedontdothat · 22/06/2024 19:53

Can’t do both parents as my husband died suddenly last year. I’m refusing to go with my current insurers as they put my premium UP when I told them about his death. The black box for the company I’ve gone with doesn’t have any curfew on it so should be fine. She’s doing her HGV asap which apparently does bring it down so 🤞

If you are the main driver and will do the most miles, you can have your DC on a Hastings Direct policy with black box and it is often the cheapest. The bizarre thing is the main driver has to use the black box only. It doesn’t matter what their age is. This means it would be you being monitored and not DC. It is daft and I checked it when my DS passed and we had to re-insure DH on his little car and wanted to add DS. The Hastings person sighed and said everyone asks if this is possible…but it is how they operate. The black box made the policy substantially cheaper than any other insurer.

Of course, DS as named driver isn’t building up no-claims, but he will never do as many miles as DH and is away at Uni now a lot of the time without the car.
