How is it that flies and butterflies can find their way in, but not find their way out?

So in the enormity which is the 'outside' you're a fly and you find the most small crack to fly through, or it might be an open door but still that isnt very much space compared to the whole of the outside and yet you're flying around inside a small room, you're hitting every single pane of glass EXCEPT the bit of glass that would have been there if it was shut. You cant feel or detect the open air through the window or door that you can get out of

And, poor butterfly, you have also missed your exit chances and now the cat has got you. RIP

I don't know the answer but I was thinking this the other day! Giant fly got in through the tiny gap in the kitchen window as I was cooking and despite opening the window as wide as it would go and opening the double doors to the garden could it get out... Could it fuck. The cat got it in the end but given it had been over an hour I had little to no sympathy for the bugger at that point.

Flies eyes are angled backwards and they jump backwards to take off. It’s bloody annoying though!

I always think this! You got in here why can't you find your way out!

Nectarinesarenice · 22/06/2024 13:41

Oh god I wish I knew the answer - My bloody cats are too fat and lazy to be bothered about the fly but they soon run when I become this mad women, chasing a huge blue bottle that got in through the crack of the window, buzzing relentlessly around the place, while I chase it with a tea towel trying to get it back out the now wide open window to no avail!

Arseholes.

Most of them don't find their way in though. There's still vastly more of them outside.
There's a high chance of one in a hundred randomly finding its way in, but then only 1% as likely that one will randomly find its way out.

The other factors include some being attracted to food sources, and many to light - so there is likely to be a difference in entrance and exit rates day and night.

That’s a bad design fault

That’s a bad design fault

Is it, though? (Of all the inconsequential things to be pondering....Grin)

They should take themselves back to their manufacturer and demand a refund.

Well clearly the design is not working too well for them, when it ends up swatted by me because they can’t find their way back out the window 😁

When approaching a house from the outside, the reflection in the windows make it look like more outside. From the inside you don't get the same illusion.

I agree, it's infuriating though!
