Why is there dots on my stamp?

Have popped to the post office this morning and bought 2 first class stamps, they didn't have qr codes on them only a numbered code on one, and 4 dots on the other in that space. Does anyone know why one of the stamps had dots?

I know I should've asked while in there but didn't notice until I've just got home

Isn't that the lining up for printing on stamps but the machine uses ?

Needmorelego · 22/06/2024 17:04

It's probably because that's a fancy picture stamp.
The bit with the letters you don't need to stick on.

That's nothing to do with the stamp itself, on either of them. It is part of the edging strip all around the entire large block of stamps that the printers use when lining up the inks for colour printing.

You can tear it off and throw it away, or you can leave it on. Makes no difference.

I've been a stamp collector for a long time. In technical terms we call it the margin.

@Star1223 In case you are wondering, it is only definitive stamps (the ones with just the King's head on them) that have the qr code.

Commemorative stamps don't.
