Any tips to help ease pain from a problem tooth while waiting for a dentist appointment?

First ever post after being a long time lurker!

My 12 year old DD has some moderate crowding in her teeth. She keeps getting her tongue caught in the overlap in between two teeth, and it's giving her ulcers and a lot of soreness on the end of her tongue.

She's had the crowding since her adult teeth grew in, but for the past few months it's been getting progressively worse.

She's got a dentist appointment on the 14th August, and we're most likely getting a referral to an orthodontist for braces. I've tried getting her an earlier appointment, but our dentist is fully booked up.

I'm hoping it won't be too long until she gets her braces on as we're most likely going to pay privately (from my research I'm pretty sure her teeth aren't crooked enough to qualify for NHS braces)

Currently up feeling terrible that I can't get her an earlier appointment/help her so any advice at all is helpful.

We've tried Bonjela and some other ulcer gels but they don't seem to do much. Any advice to help her while we're waiting is greatly appreciated!

If you are paying you can self refer to the orthodontist.

I didn't know that! Thanks so much!

Yo could try Tooth gel like orajel or similar.

Rotate painkillers i.e use paracetamol say then ibuprofen 4 hours later then paracetamol again. 4 hours later etc.

Clove oil or gel or a cotton wool bud next to the tooth works wonders. Avoid getting it on lips and gums. Tastes horrible and can make mouth water.

Not clove oil for this- that’s for pulpitic pain. Ulcer stuff like difflam better.

NEVER put clove oil on soft tissues ie gums , tongue and preferably never put clove oil in the mouth.

It is very irritant , I have had to take teeth out where clove oil has burnt through to the bone . it will make pain worse , lead to ulceration and worse.

Anyone who has clove oil please put it in the bin where it belongs.

Many people also develop allergies to clove oil .

Self refer to orthodontist if you are paying privately , if they are eligible for NHS treatment they can be added to waiting list but that will vary from 1 to 4 years depending on area.

Even if they started braces tomorrow the likelyhood is ulceration would be worse at first as the mouth needs to harden up to get used to the brackets .

Orthodontic wax will come out and if you are going to give difflam, oral gel etc don’t use it whilst eating because a numb mouth is one that gets traumatised even more.

Old fashioned hot ,salty water rinsed a few times a day helps with discomfort and healing . Yoghurt also helps to sooth.
