Let’s say a person’s salary is 15K a year for a certain job.

After a job change and two years working and promotion that person now earns 35K a year

How would you describe this increase and put it in numbers / percentages taking into account (bar simply saying 20K more)?

Difference ÷ original × 100 = percentage change

133% increase

Thanks
Sorry if I’m asking too much but would you put it in a sentence and make it sound amazing and exciting (supposing it is?)

132.5% increase & over double the salary! Pretty good!

"After an incredible job change and promotion in just two years, their salary skyrocketed by an astounding 133%, leaping from £15,000 to an impressive £35,000!"

(ChatGPT wrote that)

It is amazing!
Are you looking to put it on a cv or something for a new job?
It probably is best to highlight the increase in responsibility/progression of job titles maybe? I wouldn't mention salary.

Well the original salary of 15k was 100% of the original salary.

So a 100% increase in salary would be 30k. But 30k could also be described as 200% of the original salary (ie x 2)

5k would be 33.3% of the original salary

So 35k is a 133.3 % increase in salary or 233.3% of the original salary. And so 35k is 2.333 times the original salary.

The context of what you are trying to express is important here. What is the message you are trying to convey?

It is for a presentation about career change after many years stuck in a low income rut and finally taking the leap and starting over from the bottom in a complete new direction with little experience except transferable skills and basic English/Maths/IT qualifications

It is about dedication and hard work but also courage to change and luck to have found a new job which is a match for existing skills and a source for emerging talent

And true story too!

I would suggest just using "more than doubled" as opposed to quoting numbers.

Talipesmum · 22/06/2024 10:28

I think the actual numbers speak more clearly than percentages. I’d say their salary more than doubled in just two years - went from £15k to £35k, through promotions and job changes.
