Do you still buy wide brim/legionarries style hats for older kids?

I still go for those for my 9 and 11 year old but my dh reckons a baseball cap is fine.

It is, but it doesn’t protect the back of the neck

No, but I have girls with a LOT of hair

Just a baseball cap here. Given his friends don't wear a cap at all this is the path of least resistance, and a dollop of factor 50.

Baseball cap here! Bucket hats are back in fashion though, if they would wear one of those.

Marblessolveeverything · 21/06/2024 13:49

No, after about age three they refused to wear them. Baseball caps are a lot easier to wear and attach to bags etc.

They wear sun cream and have never got burned so far. They would swing the brim around of their neck was hot.

My 8yo DS wears Duns sun hats which are the widest brimmed I could find. He much prefers a hat to having sun cream on his face and neck.

Damn. Looks like dh might be right….

these are the hats I was contemplating getting. My kids would wear them but they would wear a baseball cap too so it doesn’t really matter. I just thought these were better because it protects the neck aswell.

Sorry even my 3YO has rebelled against the detachable neck bit on his school cap. Baseball cap + sunscreen is fine, mine have never burned.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/06/2024 14:01

DS2 has a 90s style bucket hat

They both wear ordinary caps, although their necks are protected by thick hair.

You don't tend to see children in legionnaire caps much once they've reached school age.

My grandma had something similar to the purple one for gardening…
Let them choose a baseball cap. They’ll blend in with their mates. It’ll also stay on better if they’re running around. Use P20 or similar sunscreen on the back of the neck if this is for holiday club or school where you can’t be sure they’ll reapply properly.

Get both.

My 25 yo, who has plentiful hair, was delighted to find a hat similar to those (though black) when we were on a recent boating holiday. She's got caps, just for some activities a big hat is better. More protection from sun and rain, and the tie is useful when it's windy.

DS1’s mates are cricket mad and several of them have these style hats in white for cricket. They’re Y6 and Y7 and not, I would have said, yet aware of what’s ‘cool’ as a group (I know many at that age are but this mob never even talk brands).

LER83 · 21/06/2024 15:06

My dd is 11 and wouldn't be seen dead in one of those style hats! If she has to wear a hat it's a baseball cap and suncream! But she would rather go without and wear suncream & sunglasses.

Babbahabba · 21/06/2024 16:17

I think a normal hat/cap and sunscreen is fine for a 9 & 11 year old.
