My house is making noises

I know houses make noises and it's normal.. except this house never has and in the past couple of weeks it has started clunking and banging.

My old house did this and I was used to the noises it made. I've lived in this house for about a year and a half now and only 2 weekends ago, I noticed a few clunks. Didn't think much of it but did think it was odd.

The following weekend, a small wet patch appeared on my living room wall right by the ceiling. No bathroom or anything above it and the wall is an external wall. Couldn't see where it would be coming from. The next day it had totally dried out and nothing since. I did wonder were the noises related, old pipes or something?

The past two days, the banging and clunking has been constant. It's every three seconds and it's a dull thud. Aside from driving me mad, I'm worried about what's causing it!

Any ideas or is my house just haunted?

Poltergeist.

Have any of your neighbours recently conducted an exorcism?

Could be air in your pipes have you had any water repair work done locally or and water cuts?

Bumblebeeinatree · 21/06/2024 13:47

Could be water or radiator pipes, try bleeding radiators and running through each of the taps for a while. Water tank heating up, cooling down. Thermostat or valves clunking on and off, open and shut. Any trees close by, I wondered about a frequent tapping sound and it was a small branch tapping on the gutter when it was windy. Something on a neighbours property?

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 21/06/2024 13:58

Is it a bedroom above? We had a bedroom where there had obviously been a sink in the past and it wasn't til we had to take the floorboards up for something we found all the pipework. Although it would be weird for water to have not just evaporated if it been there years I suppose. Water gets in anywhere though, not always obvious where it's coming from.
As for creaks and clunks, where are you? Because here the weather has heated up dramatically in the last few days and the house is creaking all over the place, presumably due to the expansion.

globalwondering · 21/06/2024 14:03

Thanks for the ideas. No rain at the time of the wet patch. Nothing on external wall to suggest any issues or water ingress. No gutter nearby and brickwork is all fine.

No water work etc done. We converted from oil to gas just before we moved in so brand new boiler and water tank was removed.

I'm worried about it being something to do with pipes that we can't see.

We're an end terrace on a large plot with no trees etc nearby. DP thinks the noise coming from the side of the house that's joined to our neighbour but I'm not as convinced, I hear it just as loudly on the other side.

It could be something in their house though, I have no idea.

The thudding is still going every 3 seconds- I'm at home today and it's been all day!

The box room is above that we use as an office. I don't think a sink would have ever been in there. The radiator is on the other side of the room from where the leak was too although we haven't had the heating on in months.

We're in Ireland, the weather has been a bit warmer on the odd day but not consistently and only in the last week. The noises started about 3 weeks ago now.

I'm tearing my hair out Grin

DP is going up to the loft after work but it's so rhythmic I cannot believe it's being caused by a living creature as I did consider a bird or something up there!

Have you asked the neighbours if they can hear it?

mindutopia · 21/06/2024 14:15

It sounds like a leak somewhere if that rhythmic.

anunlikelyseahorse · 21/06/2024 14:50

How old is the house? We have metal joists which clank and twang in hotter or colder weather, as they expand / contract.
Could you have something similar?

anunlikelyseahorse · 21/06/2024 14:51

Our dishwasher and washing machine also results in regular 'thwumps'

ghosts. Specifically the ghosts of World War Two children who were locked in the attack after a storm by a nasty housekeeper before your land was developed. Unfort they all perished, and want you to be aware of them so that you can unite them with your missing son. Oh sorry, actually, I think I’m mixing this up with a james herbert book that I half read a few years ago. It’s your boiler.

Deedeeee · 21/06/2024 14:58

*sorry, attic. Was overcome by emotion.

Ooo! Which James Herbert book please? I really like some of his stuff!

pandasorous · 21/06/2024 15:15

is it hungry maybe? try offering a few roast potatoes maybe?

Deedeeee · 22/06/2024 10:07

@anunlikelyseahorse the secret of crickley hall — but I only got about half way through and probably misremembered the plot. But there’s definitely thumping in the loft, water, etc. summer reading sorted 😁
