How does hayfever make you feel?

I don’t really know anyone who suffers from it, but mine seems particularly bad this year.

I can’t quite describe how I feel with it, apart from the runny nose and sneezing, I feel generally rubbish, is anyone else the same?

Mine is bad this year - sneezy, bunged up, itchy sore throat, headache. All OTC antihistamines act like sleeping tablets for me, so I have an (ineffectual) nasal spray. Mine starts in about March and goes on untill October usually, plus I have a dust allergy 😞

Two of our kids suffer for it severely - when they went out to work - it was hard holding down their jobs as they were in meetings etc - now at home easier
streaming eyes, nose, snezing non stop even with the meds etc - they both now try to stay in, keep windows closed as working from home and one has a powerful air pufier and other has that portable air condition unit and wood flooring leather sofa, hardly and clutter, makes a big difference

I medicate the hell out of it these days, so I don't feel too bad. Antihistamine tablets every day from late May to mid July, Vividrin eye drops three or four times a day (especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night), and Pirinaze spray for the worst two weeks (so now).

I used to try and minimise the medications and I felt like absolute shit - even the inside of my throat and ears were itchy.

I don't get it badly these days but in my youth I dreaded the summer. I was very well up on management but all the same felt itchy, exhausted and dehydrated all the time. It can be utterly miserable.

GigiAnnna · 21/06/2024 09:53

I suffer badly but since last week I've started using a steroid nasal spray. 2 sprays in each nostril every morning and my symptoms have stopped. It's called Pirinase and was £5 in Asda.

Itchy, so bloody itchy! Itchy face, itchy eyes even itchy lips! Feel like a terrible cold as nose streaming and sneezing a lot but also blocked up 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was really bad overnight last night. I do have strong tablets from doc but hadn't taken them yesterday. Going on holiday soon and I don't have it when I go abroad, yay!

OlderandwiserMaybe · 21/06/2024 10:14

Without medication I think I'd be a walking zombie TBH. Sore dry itchy eyes, itchy throat, dry mouth - ulcers. Thats before I start sneezing. It's like feeling ill all summer really.
I have always used medication, anti histamine tablets (fexofenadine) nasal sprays and eye drops. They allow me to function. Some days symptoms can still be overwhelming but I can generally manage. The pollen count at the moment is vv high so not surprised so many of us are suffering.

I feel pretty much like all the PPs. I would add for me it’s like sensory overload though too , and takes a toll on my mental well-being. Like someone is following me around and poking me in the arm all day or a dc saying “mum, mum” over and over until I lose it. It makes me less patient and snappy because I’m already using every bit of my tolerance for the hay fever so I can’t take any extra hassle from anything else.

The constant drip, drip of my nose. Sometimes I can’t get a tissue to my nose fast enough if I’m trying to do something else. Or if I’m trying to say something and can’t get it out because I’m on the brink of sneezing, that’s frustrating all day long.

voiceofastar · 21/06/2024 11:44

Very tired and frustrated. I'm under an ENT consultant (I have it all year round as I'm particularly allergic to spores) and he told me it doesn't cause tiredness Hmm

As well as the rhinitis, it makes me cough a lot which really stresses me out if I'm in a public place because sometimes I cough until I retch.

allaboardtheplaybus · 21/06/2024 12:57

I've had it so badly I've just had to lie in a dark room with a wet flannel on my face. Heavy headed, itchy in my ears/mouth/nose/eyes, exhausted.

I have to admit it seems to have eased off the last couple of years - I get a bit of an itchy eye and the odd sneezing fit. I have a beconase steroid spray that I take daily as soon as I get the first itch, and that seems to keep it at bay much better than tablets on their own.

LoobyDoop2 · 21/06/2024 13:13

Mine is very mild, I only get a permanent runny nose and occasionally itchy eyes. It’s triggered by dust rather than pollen- the downside of that is it’s all year round, but the upside is if I can get outside it improves loads. It must be absolutely horrible to be trapped indoors.

Kate3150 · 22/06/2024 07:12

I took an antihistamine at 4.30am, went back to sleep and got up at 6.30am.
Can still feel the itchiness in sinuses, sore throat, I can feel the headache I get starting to come on too.
It’s really hard starting the day well when you know you’ll just feel worse as it goes on ☹️

I'm so glad I found this thread, even though it's a few weeks on as I felt as if something was very different this year hay fever wise! I still feel downright ill as everyone else has described. It's really unpleasant. Let's hope things settle soon.
