1 week off work - UK break, just DH and I, where to?

Exactly as the title says.

I’ve a week off work in July. Kids grown up and working/driving now so not needing to come with us.
We have a holiday booked abroad for all of us in October so getting a sun/family holiday soon.

We’re in Glasgow so want to get away around about a 3-4 hour drive or more if it’s the right place. Weather in Scotland tends to be a bit dull and rainy while further south seems less likely so looking there maybe?

I want time to relax, go nice walks, cinema, maybe have a picnic in the sun (fingers crossed) brunches and nice food.

I did think about York but is there much to do in the city centre like this (relaxing?)? Or be based Whitby/Scarborough?
or I’ve thought jumping on the train to London for sightseeing.

comment your recommendations please 🙏🏼

We had a lovely long weekend in Ripon, not sure the weather would be great and tbh we just wandered around and relaxed but lovely it was. Also easy to get to other nice places

York/Yorkshire definitely a good place to go. There's a nice spa hotel in the city centre (Grand I think). Could fill 2/3 days just wandering around, walls, museums etc

North York Moors/Pickering and steam train to the coast.

I've just signed up to a 3 month National Art pass trial for £20 for 2 people which gets free entry to a few places and half price to places like Castle Howard, which currently has a Tony Cragg sculpture exhibition.

I'd use Newcastle as a base to explore the Northumberland coast - it's a great city with loads to do, and the coastline is stunning. Alnwick castle and gardens are both well worth a visit, as is Holy Island, Tynemouth, Bamburgh, Craster etc.

@Bjorkdidit i looked at that hotel it’s coming up for me at almost £900 for 3 nights. Looks lovely though.

I'm from Glasgow too: I love Dumfries & Galloway (which has its own wee microclimate, so the weather tends to be nice even if the rest of Scotland is bad!) or the Northumbrian coast.

York at this time of year is a bit peopley for my tastes.

Bakewell area is nice. Pretty little town, beautiful countryside and nice country pubs. Oh and Bakewell pudding which is (nothing like Bakewell tart) and absolutely delicious.
