I building a wardrobe from scratch...what should I buy?

This should be pretty fun but I'm utterly clueless when it comes to fashion. As the title says, I'm building a whole new wardrobe post pregnancy. Size 8. 165cm. Busty girl. I have a short body.
My Pre-Pregnancy wardrobe consisted of a levis pair of denim shorts which I wore almost every day and a few t shirts. A gap pair of boot cut jeans. 1 hoodie & 1 jumper. Seriously I used to just wear the same clothes everyday (wash them of course!) I really need help. I want to look nice for my daughter and set a good example. What are your favourite shops? What are your go to items? Im not really a girly girl but like to wear feminine, quite minimalist really.
Oh, I'm 30 next year so need to start getting some smarter grown up clothes. Thanks in advance!
🤞

Id buy a couple of pairs of jeans in different styles and colours
Plain good quality t shirts in whatever cut suits tou

Zephyry · 17/06/2024 14:23

Some shirts - white and striped
Knitwear - good quality
Smarter trainers
Wide leg trousers?

Zephyry · 17/06/2024 14:25

I like Zara, mango and some of h&m and M&S
Baujken is nice, a bit more expensive but good for sales

And Uniqlo is great for basics

I thought you meant literally building a wooden wardrobe!

GrannyOgre · 17/06/2024 14:27

You might want to head to the Style & Beauty board. Lots of posters who would love to help you shop!

MuscariFan · 17/06/2024 14:29

Don't forget to dress for your own life, if that doesn't sound too cheesy. If your previous style was very casual, it's unlikely that you're going to change drastically with a baby in the mix, so aim for smarter versions of what you can really see yourself wearing.

Maybe start with a nicer bag that is still you, some smarter trainers, carefully chosen jeans that suit you in a variety of washes, perhaps some 'tops' rather than plain t-shirts, smarter end of sweatshirts?

I was going to suggest IKEA😂

Op can you get to a John Lewis or similar and get a personal shopper to give you an idea? It really depends on your lifestyle, inate style and what you want to achieve.

I rarely wear jeans, prefer a wide leg trouser, winter is dresses and tights, if we finally get summer shorts / vests / sweater for when it gets cold.

M and s has some nice stuff at the moment and Tu occasionally turns up some good bits.

So did I. I was going to say that if you don't know what you're doing, perhaps you should just go get an Ikea Pax instead.

But I agree with @MuscariFan I don't see why you should change what you wear because you have a baby or are approaching 30. In any case it's going to be years before she notices what you wear. So just wear what you like.

LaCerbiatta · 17/06/2024 14:43

Was going to say buy a pax one from Ikea!!

Unfit · 17/06/2024 14:45

I was coming to say make sure the internal dimensions take ikea shelving and drawers.

Fashion wise, can't help, sorry!

Daftasabroom · 17/06/2024 15:07

My first thought was Ikea, wrong type of wardrobe obvs.

DexaVooveQhodu · 17/06/2024 15:10

@Daftasabroom me too I thought this was a DIY thread. I recently finished building a wardrobe from scratch using plywood and some cunning 90° angle metal joints, rail fittings and a some profile moldings on the edges for decoration with a lick of paint. Ikea didn't do the size I needed.

It's just got my old clothes in it though.

Thanks for all the replies! I think building a physical wardrobe would be much easier than the whole fashion thing. Hopefully this thread will be of help to being embarking on a DIY wardrobe project 🤣.

I get the point about not dressing differently because of the baby but I really need to find a style/buy some clothes! I still dress like I'm 15 and it's embarrassing.

My main problem is the boob situation. Its so hard, especially in summer to find clothes I feel comfortable wearing.

@Zephyry I took your advice and bought 6 pairs of jeans in different styles of vinted. It's a good start!

I still dress like I’m 15 and I’m a lot older than you! My style is jeans, converse or DMs, band t-shirts and jumpers or hoodies. But now my jeans are good quality and my jumpers are cashmere. Not point fighting against my comfort zone. I possess one dress and one decent pair of trousers in case I ever need to go to a work event.
