I have a root canal on 2nd July and just need some positive success stories as I am quite nervous about it not working!

any positive stories and how your root canal tooth is holding up would be greatly appreicated

I've had 3 root canals, one in a molar which was 12 years ago, and 2 others in incisors which were 30 and 34 years ago. Never had any problems with any of them since.

thefireplace · 17/06/2024 08:41

Root canal done at a dental school 8 years ago, been fine ever since.

MagpiePi · 17/06/2024 08:42

I’ve had at least two done and both are still ok after 5 or more years.(I think the fact that I can’t remember shows what a non-issue they are!)
i had a brilliant dentist for the first one who reassured me that it wouldn’t hurt as he would use the correct amount of anaesthetic, and he was right.
The worst thing is your jaw can get a bit stiff with having to hold your mouth open for quite a long time. The other worst thing is the cost!!

No dental work can be absolutely guaranteed but your dentist shouldn’t recommend it if it is more than likely to fail.

I had a root canal done on a lower back tooth over 40 years ago and it's been absolutely fine, no problems at all.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 17/06/2024 09:04

My root canal tooth recently gave up after 13 years of being rock solid and I had a crown put on it. Tooth was completely dead so I felt no pain at all when it crumbled. I would 100% have another root canal if needed.

Afternoonteavirgin · 17/06/2024 09:08

I've had one where a dentist cocked up a normal filling resulting in my requiring a root canal.
I go to a dentist who doesn't use needles for anaesthetic, so felt no pain being anaesthesitised, no pain during the procedure and it has been fine since. Worst part was sitting with my mouth open for 45 minutes being bored.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/06/2024 09:10

I've had a few root canals done - two or three, but they clearly weren't that remarkable if I can't remember! They went smoothly and I've never had any problems at the time or since.

The most painful bit was paying 😩

Same here no problem since. It’s a case of gritting your teeth(;)) and getting on with it- it takes some time but definitely not as bad as I’d thought!

Zeeze · 17/06/2024 10:23

I have one in a front tooth that has lasted 40 years and had another last year in a molar which is holding up so far.

BridgertonFan · 17/06/2024 10:26

I had one done over 10 years ago. It seemed to take ages but I never felt a thing and I’ve had no issues with it.

OolongTeaDrinker · 17/06/2024 11:18

I've had two - one around 20 years ago, and the other around 9 years ago, and hadn't given them a second thought until now. Healed fine and no problems since. And I do remember them being way less painful than I had been led to believe too. Good luck, I'm sure you will be fine :)

GentleSloth · 17/06/2024 11:58

Thank you all for the update! Really kind of you all. Please may you tell me if you got the teeth crowned after the root canal?

I had one done last year.

I’m not going to lie and say mine was easy as I think I had a moderately difficult root canal, at least i hope it was that and not the more difficult one!

As far as I recall yes the tooth was crowned after it and no issues at all since then.

The major thing I didn’t like (and why a lot of dentists don’t like doing it) is it can be complex, you as a patient have to have your mouth open for a long time.

What I didn’t like for me, was no anaesthetic gel was put on my gum so when I had the proper anaesthetic injected it was bloody painful and I hyperventilated, but I’d tell them I needed a anaesthethic gel in future or if you have a low pain threshold.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/06/2024 12:07

It totally worked for me. How could it not work? The tooth will have no feeling anymore. The one thing is you can still get gum disease around the tooth which can cause discomfort and pain, so make sure you clean really thoroughly. I had an amalgam crown over mine as it was in the back. This was about 15 years ago.
I would recommend asking the dentist for a diazapam prescription, take the tablet an hour before the surgery. It's quite long and though not painful, the mouth has to be held open so its kind of uncomfortable. But it's totally worth it, absolutely no regrets at all!

I've had 2 or 3 as well (also can't remember).. I definitely have 2 crowns - one ceramic, one metal, the metal one I've had for about 30 years, the ceramic more than 20 - I think only the ceramic was a root canal and crown, although I'm not completely certain.

More recently I've had one done near the front of my back teeth, I don't have a crown on that one I think.

No problem with any of the root canals or crowns ever. Just don't ask me about wisdom teeth :D

FattypuffToThinnifer · 17/06/2024 13:31

I’ve had two done on two adjacent teeth; I have a ceramic crown on each. In both cases there was an abscess beforehand which was really painful - so getting the root canal and a temp crown while the full crown was being made was such a huge relief.

One of mine is 6.5 years and the other about 5 years old and they are both fine

CandiedPrincess · 17/06/2024 13:40

About 6 years old and crowned. Perfectly fine, no issues.

Because you can get an infection in the now dead root.

This is the most common reason for failure and then either extraction or re do the root canal.

But the cost with a crown, is diabolical, even without, around , me its around £850 per tooth, another 5 or 6oo for a crown.

Thankfully I am NHS so very grateful!

When my root canal was done, it was not initially crowned, it had a big filling in it. About 10 years later the filling failed - I didn't have toothache, no drama, I think my dentist just noticed the filling was starting to fail. She did a crown for me, and since then, no worries.
