I am British but married an American and moved to Idaho. We came home the other night to find a moose in our garden! We were a bit scared to get out of the car as they can be more aggressive than bears!

Beautiful photo but I would be terrified if that was in my garden!

Momstermunch · 17/06/2024 06:24

Oh wow! There is literally a moose loose about your hoose

Lesina · 17/06/2024 06:27

I’d love to see a moose. I didn’t know they were aggressive. They look class.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/06/2024 06:27

Wow! How exciting!

pinkgin79 · 17/06/2024 06:28

Wow they are beautiful!

newnamethanks · 17/06/2024 06:28

Everything is bigger in USA😁what an encounter! Did it just wander off?

mondaytosunday · 17/06/2024 06:29

We came across one while driving to Vermont. Casually strolling down the road. They are HUGE!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 17/06/2024 06:30

Awesome Grin I didn't realise they were agressive, somehow in my head they're calm and a bit dim. We did see some in a zoo in Finland and were surprised at their enormity - photos don't really do them justice. They're sodding HUGE.

newnamethanks · 17/06/2024 06:32

Just as well you're not still here in Surrey, OP, where idiot policemen used their own special powers to deal with an escaped calf. Disgusting, aberrant, behaviour.

@determinedtomakethiswork

We were nervous. Our garden is quite big but moose are fast.

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername

From what I understand, they can be very aggressive. And they are fast! They can run 35mph!

I think when the males are in rut or you encounter a female with babies are the most dangerous. This was a juvenile male, he has stubs on his head.

@Momstermunch

Good one! Haha

@Lesina

They are amazing creatures. Very dangerous to hit one with your car as their legs are so long their body will just come crashing down on you. A lot of times a moose will come off better in a car accident than the people involved. Adult males can weigh up to 1600 lbs!

Tinytigertail · 17/06/2024 06:44

Beautiful photo, thanks for sharing. I had no idea that they could be so dangerous!

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 17/06/2024 06:45

@newnamethanks

Yes, it eventually sauntered off. We tried honking the horn (we had just arrived home) and shouting to drive it off. Moose just slowly turned his head and looked uninterested. Carried on munching leaves.

We stayed in the car until it left. It didn't seem bothered by us at all.

Our dog ran and started barking at it and it didn't even care. Later on I read that moose hate dogs and that is one of the primary things that provokes them! But thankfully this one was docile.

🤣😂

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 17/06/2024 06:52

@Lesina

I believe they are usually only aggressive when threatened (unless in rut or with young). But still. They have killed people before, and attack more people every year than bears do. They are flipping huge.

I'm a bit scared to let my kids play outside now! It went around the corner to eat our bush and we couldn't see it, although it was still there for several minutes. If we had driven up 5 mins later we wouldn't have seen it and my kids would have run out to play.

@newnamethanks

What happened?!

OP posts:
newnamethanks · 17/06/2024 07:07

Sorry OP, I shouldn't have mentioned it but it was just the other day. Loose calf - a calf! - half size cow, loose on the road. They intentionally hit it with their car to get it off the road. I'm sorry to derail here, it's inappropriate, apologies. Enjoy your wildlife and watch out for those bears😀

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 17/06/2024 07:35

@newnamethanks
That is terrible! Absolutely appalling!
We actually don't have bears in our area. We don't have much for forests. Nearest bears would be a couple hrs drive away I would think.

Mountain lions, wolves and coyotes though.

OP posts:
newnamethanks · 17/06/2024 11:38

Shocking. People are very upset and driver has been suspended. No bears? That's probably a good thing. Friend in NY state noticed, on her cctv, that a young bear had found its way into her basement and was sorting through the recycling.

RetroTotty · 17/06/2024 12:25

A helpful bear making sure the recycling is sorted correctly.

OldTinHat · 17/06/2024 12:39

Good lord!! And I was terrified about a random cat that wandered in yesterday... 😱
