mobility car

Is it better financially to save up myself and buy a cheap used car and then use ongoing payments for petrol, tax, mot and repairs etc or give up my entire mobility element to get a newer mobility car?

A mobility car would most likely work out better, as they cover insurance and tax for the car.

Just in case you didn't know You're entitled to tax exemption on your own car by receiving the enhanced mobility component.

Use your PIP for a car. You will be able to get a far nicer one that is more suited to your needs, than if you saved up/used your own money for it.

It depends.
If you have a PIP award that is 'ongoing' (which means 10 years..there is no indefinite award now) then a motability car may be best, especially if you don't do high mileage.
However if it is going to be renewed in a couple of years and it's not certain you'll get it again, then I'd get my own car, use PIP to pay for it, and have it disability tax exempt.

Mouldyfoodhelp · 17/06/2024 02:50

Yeah my mum had her PIP reassessed or was moved onto it from another benefit where she had a mobility car out of nowhere like 3 months after getting the car they said she didn't qualify she had 30 days to give it back she was able to buy it I think from the dealer I'm not sure but there was no discount.

She went to tribunal and the enhanced mobility element was reinstated but that didn't help her with the car and she decided to keep the car since to avoid something similar happening

Yes I’m worried that the benefit will be removed at some point. I will have the disability for the rest of my life but I have heard of the benefits being removed and then given back I’m not fussed about having a new car just something that I can get about in.

Mobility is great, but it is essentially just a finance scheme. They are the uks biggest lease company.

so yes if you want the security of knowing it’s all taken care of, new car every x years.
but it comes with the usual risks of damage / wear and tear being paid for at the end, and the mobility element being removed
