Braces and food

Bracesbraces · 16/06/2024 18:26

Please help! My dd has just had her braces fitted, because of the fit she cannot currently chew or even bite with her front teeth. What can she eat? She is living on mash potato and soup. Has anyone been through this? Can you give us some ideas please.
Thanks

DS ate loads of supernoodles (well, supermarket own brand) when he had his braces fitted.

longdistanceclaraclara · 16/06/2024 18:30

How soon is 'just'? Takes a week to settle IME, soup, ice cream, smoothies through a straw. It won't last long.

BillieEyelash1 · 16/06/2024 18:36

IME it took a week to settle and be able to eat normal food again. As PP said, soups, ice creams then slowly building up to harder food. I rather liked those tiny pasta pieces tbh!

Bracesbraces · 16/06/2024 18:36

Fitted on Thursday so we know it's early days and dd is coping will with the initial discomfort but the inability to bite or chew will be the same until her next appointment in August so I want to find her a few alternatives to get her through the next 8 weeks.

Noodles.

Mini pasta in sauce/pesto.

Mash.

Cottage pie.

Risotto.

Soup.

Ice cream/yoghurts/apple sauce/fruit puree (no seeds)/rice pudding

It gets better soon and she'll back to eating mostly normally, just not very hard things.

SharonEllis · 16/06/2024 18:40

My son suddenly got the hang of it after about 4 days. Now eats pretty normally though can be a bit slower than before.

Bracesbraces · 16/06/2024 18:42

Thank you, I really appreciate all your responses.

Cut everything up into really small pieces, then chew on the back teeth if they’re not too sore. It does get better

MiddleAgedDread · 16/06/2024 18:52

Yogurt
smoothies
milkshake / protein shake
if you soak porridge oats in milk overnight then blend them with a banana and berries in the morning it makes a filling smoothie

Bracesbraces · 16/06/2024 18:52

She has blocks on her back teeth to stop her teeth being able to come together so the inability will chew will continue until they are removed (hopefully August).

QuickFetchTheCoffee · 16/06/2024 19:01

Has she definitely been told she can't remove the twin blocks to eat?
My DD was told she shouldn't and she decided not to have them, but I've been told friends' teens have removed them to eat and while the effects took longer, they were able to stick with them because of doing this.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/06/2024 19:08

Scrambled eggs
Soup
Noodles
Cottage pie
Lasagne
Fried eggs
Liquidised meals if she gets desperate

Bracesbraces · 16/06/2024 21:32

@QuickFetchTheCoffee they don't come out, they are glued in

QuickFetchTheCoffee · 16/06/2024 23:14

Oh. Glued in? I didn't realise that was even done, sorry.

jacket potatoes (without the jacket) but with butter
Sweet potatoes
Parsnip mash
homemade meatballs or meatloaf (can be made with finely diced onion and breadcrumbs to make crumbly)
Fish (done in milk to make soft)

Look at soft food diet online and adapt to add flavour.

Artesia · 17/06/2024 07:44

We relied on smoothies/milkshakes for breakfast- full fat yogurt, banana, avocado and whole milk whizzed up with either frozen strawberries or chocolate powder. Kept him going til lunch (soup).

petalpower · 17/06/2024 09:18

I had quite a lot of muller rice pots and those little pots of ambrosia custard when my braces were tightened.

WhamBamThankU · 17/06/2024 09:33

@Bracesbraces My DS had fixed twin blocks fitted and also couldn't eat to start with. For about 4 days he only had protein yoghurts and shakes, then after about a week he was eating everything normally.

Easipeelerie · 17/06/2024 09:45

My daughter is having her braces fitted right now. She is autistic, has been anorexic and has a limited diet.
Im feeling a little bit panicky about what she’ll eat. She eats noodles, Weetabix and ice cream but there’s nothing else soft I can think of. Are crumpets soft enough? Any ideas for getting protein in?

CameToASuddenArborealStop · 17/06/2024 10:01

My dd has a small appetite, is growing fast, and braces which hurt when they’re tightened.

For protein, she is drinking gold top milk and chocolate milk. Lots of Skyr and other creamy yoghurts. Crème caramel.

For fruit and veg, stewed fruit with custard.

Shes missing savoury things, so I’ve made chicken soup and she can eat bread in small bits if she soaks them in the soup and avoids the crust.

AdaColeman · 17/06/2024 10:27

Cheesy mashed potatoes with added cream

Fish pie

Scrambled eggs

Home made baked egg custard

Home made lentil or bean soup, blended

Home made milk puddings

AdaColeman · 17/06/2024 10:34

Don't forget that real Greek yoghurt is rich in protein (Total brand for example) but any Greek Style yoghurt is merely thickened with starch etc, so is not as nutritionally beneficial.

So if you're trying to get protein into your teenager, choose your yoghurt carefully.

FunnysInLaJardin · 17/06/2024 10:41

that sounds awful @Bracesbraces . DS2 had twin blocks but he was able to take them out to eat.

Surely they shouldn't be glued in?

Bracesbraces · 17/06/2024 11:39

Thank you everyone this is really helpful. @Easipeelerie dd is drinking huel shakes which are high in protein.

WhamBamThankU · 17/06/2024 12:59

@FunnysInLaJardin

My DS' were glued in as the orthodontist said lots of kids take them out too much to make them effective.

FunnysInLaJardin · 17/06/2024 13:46

@Bracesbraces so glad DS2's weren't glued in then, I cant imagine how he would have coped

Our dentist just made it very clear that if he didn't wear it then he would refuse to treat him
