The seasons seem out of kilter with the standard

It's mid June and it's absolutely chucking it down and we have the heating on ❄️🥶
Last week was hail stones and sun.

Over the past ten years I've always said to my husband that winter is jan-march but even now it seems to be creeping towards April/may and only now are we in spring. Summer months will be late aug for a couple of months if we are lucky.

I feel like in school we were told 4 seasons over 12 months = 3 months per season but frankly that's a load of nonsense.

It’s climate change. We were warned of milder, wetter winters and wetter, windier summers with some extremely hot periods. It’s no surprise that with the average temperature rises we’ve already seen that we are feeling the effects. It’s like nobody ever noticed things like biblical floods in Bangladesh and so on, but as soon as we can’t get the barbecue out in Surrey, it’s news. Sorry, that’s not meant to be rude to you, OP, but reflects my general observations.

I don't think we really have different seasons now. It's either cold and wet or a bit warmer and wet.

I'm 54 and when I was younger you could very definitely see, and predict, the changes in the seasons. You could sense it, smell it, taste it etc., but now, there's no discernible difference apart from the temperature.

I used to love Winter freezing, sunny days with the frost crunching underfoot and seeing your breath in the air. Spring was all windy and rainy, but with a hesitant warmth and optimism and wildlife emerging. Summer started off with misty mornings which the sun would burn off and turn into warmth and sunshine with the sleepy sound of dozens of insects going about their business and everything smelling of grasses. Autumn was a mixture of sunshine and cold with the smell of ripe apples and smoke in the air and crunchy leaves you could kick through.

Now it's just endless sogginess and uncertainty.

I know at least we're not subject to life changing disasters brought about by climate change, but I do miss the different seasons, each with their own character and backdrop.

What on earth is wrong with me ??!! That paragraph about the seasons made me cry 😭 literally transported me back to childhood the description was so accurate

What’s weird is May half term in Cornwall this year and last were chilly with some sun but 2021 and 2022 we were on the beach every day in swimwear because it was so warm. The air is definitely much cooler for this time of year though.

Oh no, I totally agree.

Reversal of climate change will surely take as long as it did to do? So if I'm wanting what @lawnseed has described I will be well into my senior years before I get it :s

And we haven't done much to reverse it!

When there was a heatwave in July 2019 , the weather people said ' this will be the norm ' and showed the El Niño effect on the UK with drawings and images.
However, other people are saying the summers will be wetter / cooler now.
Not sure what to read or believe.
I like it cooler myself , but I agree the seasons seem to have changed.

We just had the hottest May since records began. June has been disappointing.

The hottest may thing seems unreal!

Ours was atrocious and I remember when that was posted on social media it seemed like everybody thought it was a joke.

Crazy to think it was and I'm confused how it could have been...so many people had their heating on!

I agree. I also read the hottest May thing and thought that must be an outright fabrication or manipulation of data because that is completely inaccurate in my part of the country.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 16/06/2024 15:43

Absolutely!

Is it like when a snowflake falling directly on the weather center that is classed as a white Christmas? But that's the only square foot a snow landed and the rest of the country is dry or whatever.

How is the data gathered for hottest month etc?!

frozendaisy · 16/06/2024 15:45

Warmest is different to driest.

Climate change is happening. As the tipping points accelerate they will be more unpredictable and extreme.

If the jet stream stalls, which is possible with the change in ocean temperatures, the UK will start getting winters like Canada.

Utter head fuck planning crops to feed us and livestock.

It just doesn't seem like enough people think it of any great importance.

So what to do?
Get a winter pad in Greece?

Mrcrabsleg · 16/06/2024 15:46

Has the weather forecast changed where you are for this week? Suddenly, we have temps into the 20’s and it’s actually warm although overcast here today, after the predicted temps last week only being around 16,17 - maybe summer is on the way!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 16/06/2024 15:53

We were just at the Cumbria center parcs and the weather had said rain for the past two days bit on the end it was warm and dry!

But back to Scotland is tipping it down and I checked for the week it's just crap.! Even did the 14 day lookahead and honestly I want to book a holiday abroad which will only contribute to the problem!
