High sleeper bed for 9/10 yr old?

FamouslyFrothy · 16/06/2024 08:03

I'm moving into a new build and kitting it all out from scratch, including my son's bedroom. He'll be 9 going on 10 when we move in.

For his bedroom, I wondered about getting a high cabin bed type thing, like in the attached photo. I think this would really suit him now, but I wonder about as he gets older?? What age would it start to feel a bit baby-ish?

They're not cheap so wouldn't want to spend out £££s to then need to replace when he's a gangly teen!

High sleeper bed for 9/10 yr old?

My (male) best friend and I both had one of these until we were 16 or 17.

They are an absolute pain to change the sheets.
How much ceiling height do you have?
I think if you have room not to have one, then don't.
DD's wasn't as high and was still too close to the ceiling at 14, and she is petite. (To stand up on the bed)

My one word of caution would be make sure you have high enough ceilings! DD had one and it was fine until she got tall and could barely sit up in it. It’s now mostly used for storage until I can convince someone to disassemble it…

They are a nightmare to change the sheets.
DD was hitting her head on the ceiling by 10 when she had hers,

I'd avoid, maybe go for a mid sleeper that still gives some storage but not the overall height.

Teen DD now has a small double ottoman bed fr Next, it's great for storing things underneath she likes the extra space.

As others have said, changing the sheets on these are a PITA!

InTheRainOnATrain · 16/06/2024 08:18

I’d only get one if the room is so small that’s the only way you can fit a desk. Otherwise go for a normal single bed. It’s not like they need masses of floor space for playing at that age.

At nearly 10, honestly I wouldn't. Mine all had misleepers for their entire childhoods (straight into them from their cots) and loved them but they all outgrew them (both physically and in terms of feeling they weren't "grown up") by secondary school. Fortunately by this point theu had had a LOT of wear so I didn't feel to gutted to move them on. They all moved on to doubles or small doubles.

If you really want a high sleeper I would pick one up second hand (you can get them for peanuts because they have such a limited shelf life).

Quitelikeacatslife · 16/06/2024 08:44

We had one when DS was about 8 and when he was 11 changed to an ottoman double bed. They grow quickly and it was a real pain to change the sheets. Great if you have no space, but if you have another option I'd go for bed and desk

FamouslyFrothy · 16/06/2024 10:51

A pretty overwhelming no then!! 😂
YES, hadn't even thought of changing the sheets, I can imagine that's a proper PITA!

Lots of useful feedback, thank you everyone
