I'm married but use Ms.
What do I put re title and marital status on application forms for a teaching role?

In any school I’ve taught in we use Ms for either married or unmarried teachers and I only referred to being married on the actual contract once given the job

BiscuityBoyle · 15/06/2024 19:26

Schools are desperate for teachers. I can’t see them giving a shiny shite if you are married.

BiscuityBoyle · 15/06/2024 19:27

And all female teacher I know get called Miss. Just like all men get called sir. Nothing to do with marital status or knighthood, just quicker than say Mrs or Mr Name.

Ah. No. Secondary, sorry!

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 15/06/2024 19:22

@ExperiencedTeacher Yes. It's most definitely been on.

In the UK? That should be reported to the EHRC.

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 15/06/2024 19:01

@dementedpixie Potentially, yes. I'm in a primary school of around 80 other women and all the married ones are called Mrs. I'm constantly asked by kids and staff alike why I'm Ms if I'm married.

So educate them.

JurassicClark · 15/06/2024 19:13

Where are you teaching, the Surrendered Wives Academy? In a 1950s timeslip?

Good grief, this.
I've been teaching for more than years and have always been Ms.
Never a question! In fact in one school all the women were automatically listed as Ms.
What part of the country are you in?

thistimelastweek · 15/06/2024 19:30

I don't know where you live OP but where I am no-one gives a flying fuck about this sort of stuff.

FluffMagnet · 15/06/2024 19:31

Good grief. The reception teacher at my primary school was a (newly married) Ms. That was 30 years ago! Also, what legitimate reason can they possibly have for asking for your marital status to be disclosed (and processed by them)? Can you not skip the question?

Are you in the North West? That's the only place I've been (rudely) questioned about my title and refusal to take DH's surname. It apparently emasculated him. DH was completely baffled by the whole exchange, as he couldn't give a toss either way.

SuziQuinto · 15/06/2024 19:33

I haven't been asked for my marital status in decades! Very odd.

Gladtobeout · 15/06/2024 19:35

In our school women are ma'am and men are sir. I've been called mum more in this school in 1 term than I have in nearly 20 years in various other schools being Miss!

It's illegal to ask marital status on an application. Sometimes they have an equal opportunities monitoring form. But they are anonymous and filed separately from the application form.

Ms has been perfectly everyday use in schools since at least the 90s. Where are you that it's even being discussed?

rzb · 15/06/2024 19:40

@Gladtobeout 'Sir' and 'Ma'am' seem the obvious choice to me for use in schools. I don't understand why this hasn't been adopted more widely.

JurassicClark · 15/06/2024 19:42

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 15/06/2024 19:19

@JurassicClark Well I'm the only married Ms of around 80 others.

Through my children's education, they've had plenty of teachers using Ms. Of my friends who are teachers, about a quarter are Ms.

I'm in the North of England. I'm wondering which cutural backwater you're stuck in that regards Ms as anything out of the ordinary. They are extremely rude to question you about it.

@WindowViper It's been on all application forms so far.
I've been told by some I am being disrespectful to my husband and also that I'm "challenging" the choices of 99.9% of married women.

Whoever told you that is bonkers. So should not have any notice taken of them.

Eh? This is so weird. Where is this?
I'm just going to echo pp and wonder if your school is in a time slip! I've worked in many schools, it has never been raised or commented on. I have no idea if my colleagues are married or not, and don't care.
The last two schools I have been in, the Headteacher was Ms.
Perhaps ask them if you're going to be paid in shillings.

Have you time travelled to the 1970s. (I was Ms in the 1970s but I did get asked about it)

ArticSaviour · 15/06/2024 20:15

Is it on the data gathering part that gets detached from the application - along with ethnicity etc?

SuziQuinto · 15/06/2024 20:17

I haven't seen that in school data gathering for years!

so just tell them why you chose it?

PithyLion · 15/06/2024 20:19

literally nobody cares.

The only time anybody cares about the title of a female teacher is when they have just printed out a name tag wrong and you point it out and they have to do it again

QueenofLouisiana · 15/06/2024 20:24

I’m called by my first name, all our staff are- from the head downwards. I have no clue about the marital status of most of my colleagues, just whether or not they have a partner.
I’m in the UK, state special school. I teach yr6-10. It’s very liberating to just be me, not Mrs Louisiana, once you get used to it.

SnapdragonToadflax · 15/06/2024 20:27

Are you applying to religious schools? I can't think why on earth anyone else would comment. There are a few Ms teachers at my son's school... not as many as I assumed (or hoped) but it's hardly uncommon.

I do hope you laughed at the comment about your husband 😂

FoodieToo · 15/06/2024 21:57

Goodness, that's So strange ! I teach in a primary in Dublin and all women are Ms. and all men Mr. I prefer first names but the Ms. Mrs. thing baffles me !!

Why on earth should women be defined by being married or not ???

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 16/06/2024 00:37

Thanks all. Upon reflection I think I'm just going to go with Miss Family Name and ignore the marital status if asked for.

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 16/06/2024 00:39

@PithyLion Can't really do that without offending the married Mrs can I?
