Do you share fitness data with friends and family?

I've just been given a fitness watch and DH is on and on at me about accepting his friend request. I don't really see the need to get notifications every time he does something, and don't see why he needs to know what I'm doing.

I am far more unfit than he is and am trying to do something about it but don't really want to be checked up on all the time. He is also a great advocate of "going for a run" which, to be frank, is an activity I hate. I have knee issues (surgery recovery) prolapse and bad hayfever, therefore any activity I do is by default not worth as much as "going for a run".

Do you find sharing this stuff with friends and family beneficial or is the thought behind it motivation by shame?

I find it extremely tedious and unfollow people who do this. It's just someone's hobby; why would that be any more interesting than me doing gardening or going shopping?

I have a garmin watch and it's linked to Strava and Connect. I am 'friends' with my husband only. We do a fair bit of hill walking together as well as individual interests (cycling, yoga, step, weights work outs). Neither of us get notifications of each others activities, they are just 'there' when I'm updating my info. I don't have a problem with him seeing what I do, I like to see his cycling routes. There's no competition or shame involved, I find it motivational particularly after having suffered a heart attack it helped me improve my fitness levels. I also have severe asthma and a hip replacement so I'm no where near as fit as he is and never will be now because of medication.

Personally it works for me!

I don’t find it beneficial as I’m only really interested in using the data for my own Interest and motivation.

I definitely think I’d be cautious about who you share with. My MIL let slip that she gets a ‘tickle’ out of the fact that she always does more steps than me. 🧐 found that weird competitiveness quite annoying so a ‘technical glitch’ quietly removed her from my friends list 😁

😮😮😮

That's horrible.

No, I love tracking my own data but it i strictly for me, I don't want to share it.

Oh gosh I would hate it as it would be extra pressure to do sports and right kind of it. I just want to be left to do my exercising by myself.

DS does a lot of fell running , hiking etc so I bought him a gps garmin and insist he shares tracking info with me & his housemate when he’s out on his own.

you can always just say no! what did you want the fitness watch for? or was it an unexpected gift?

i love my apple watch, it links up to my dieting app and it helps me track my steps and calories for the day.

i do not share the data with anyone... just because someone does 1000 more steps than me does not make me any less of a person

That's very odd but meaningless - I do the same walk at the same time as my DH but I always do more steps than him because, he says, I have a mincy little walk. Mention that to your MIL!
