Child dialled emergency services

When I unlocked my phone and went through the notifications, I saw one which said all calls will be blocked for 2 hours. I went onto my call log and saw emergency services were dialled at 6am!

Me and my 4 year old were downstairs at the time and I was making some breakfast, phone was in the living room. I've asked her but she said she was just trying to take pictures on my phone and she hadn't spoken to anyone

Do I need to do anything now? Would they have called me back by now? My phone was locked but it allows you to press on the pre-dialled emergency numbers like 112 or 999

DS did this about 12 years ago. Police called me back just to ask if eveything was ok and did we have children in the house. Was extremely apologetic. The call handler says it happens all the time.

Shityshitybangbang · 15/06/2024 09:03

Yes they phone back

Whatnonsenseisthat · 15/06/2024 09:15

Sorry to add..She called 141112, and 911 5 mins apart. Just saw the details, 1st call was 4 seconds ans no details on the 2nd one!

Yes Ds did one time. They called back, asked my location, age of DS and my personal details (name and DOB). Nothing came from it and the officer sort of laughed it off and said kids would get you hung. It happens.

Whatnonsenseisthat · 15/06/2024 09:47

@Mammma91 did they call back right away? Glad they were kind about it!

What country are you in? It's 999 here not 911.
Mine did it (landline) years ago, they called back more or less straight away.

elliejjtiny · 15/06/2024 09:50

My DS did this during his obsession with the emergency services phase. I was mortified but the call handler was very kind and said it happens all the time.

911 redirects to 999 on UK mobiles apparently.

Whatnonsenseisthat · 15/06/2024 11:48

Thanks all! Good to know it's not just me it's happened to! Will not be leaving my phone lying around now. I'm in the UK but my phone has a list of emergency numbers you can access without unlocking i.e 999, 911, 141112 etc

I did this once at soft play, trying to shove my phone in my pocket while balancing a toddler and 12 other things. They did ring back a couple times, which I didn’t notice as phone in pocket and that was that.

SnackFish · 15/06/2024 12:31

This happened with me and they didn't ring back

LifeInTheRaw · 15/06/2024 14:37

Forty odd years ago I had an old fashioned dial landline phone, can't remember why, but I always used to leave it on the carpet.
DC was (just about) crawling and I was dashing around to get ready the buggy or pram, I can't recall, to walk to the local village shops.
Think I was gone less than an hour, and came home to the neighbours telling me the police had broken into my home, as they could get not response by knocking.
There's me terrified that I had burglars whist I was at the shops...
Nah, my little one had apparently crawled to the phone, messed around with the dial, and got thru to the emergency services...
The agent could here my dc murmuring indecipherable noises, so sent the police to investigate, in case there was someone in distress....
Sooooooooo embarrassing, and how on Earth did dc manage to get 999, on a phone that had the kinda dial you had to "stir" around to get the digits to the top...
three successive times?
Funny now, but was amazed at the time.

They tried the first time from no caller ID, I missed and they phoned back around 1 hour later. I hope you’re ok! Don’t worry too much. Kids do these things!

PithyLion · 15/06/2024 17:26

they might be ok about it, or they might follow it up, technically you are responsible for ensuring your child does not do this

LittleMissSleepyUK · 15/06/2024 17:32

I’ve never heard of 141112, what’s that used for?

Barleysugar86 · 15/06/2024 17:32

My daughter did this- phoned 999, hung up, they phoned back but she still had my phone so answered it and presumably they got heavy breathing or something similar. Anyway long story short first I knew of it I had two kindly police officers checking on us at the front door....

Whatnonsenseisthat · 15/06/2024 17:43

No one's called me back and it happened at 6am so i'm guessing they would have rang me back or followed up by now if they were going to. Lesson learnt!

Thanks all for sharing similar stories!

@LittleMissSleepyUK I have no idea! Apparently there is also a 141999

Try not to worry. Kids do this quite frequently and call handlers are well used to it. You may get a text from them if they haven't rang

WillimNot · 15/06/2024 17:59

I would think these days they're too busy to call back

When DS was about 6 he phoned them on DHs phone. We had no idea.

First we knew, we got 4 police officers at the door, 2 with a real attitude problem.

I obviously apologised profusely and said he is autistic, he probably didn't realise what he was doing, I will speak to him, he's 6.

Wasn't enough for Mr Bully PC. He demanded to come in and speak to "all the occupants" because he was "concerned" for people's safety

Problem is, DS also has allergies, and back then we hadn't had his full allergy screening yet, so he had swollen eyes from an allergy the night before. Mr Bully PC and his equally hysterical WPC chun decides I've clearly smacked him repetitive and he's called for help

Enter DD who was 7, looks at them and says "we, actually my brother is silly and he ate something wrong last night and now his face looks like this."

Even this wasn't acceptable so I pulled out a letter from the hospital saying they were aware of his allergies.

I ended up being called by SS but they agreed they'd been OTT.

PiggieWig · 15/06/2024 18:12

My DS called 999 from the landline once when he was about 2. He was playing, saying ‘grandma? Hiyaaaa’.

The call handler called me back but was lovely about it.

Mumteedum · 15/06/2024 18:17

Happened to me with ds when he was 2. He'd picked up the landline phone. I noticed he was talking to someone. I was making tea. I took the phone and was mortified..my call handler was not understanding at all. I got a massive telling off for letting him play with the phone ( I had never let him do this). And she was going on (and on) about stopping others getting through. I ended the call after apologizing because actual she was prolonging the call not me. Confused

Isn't 141 the prefix to withhold your number? So I guess 141999 is the same as 999 etc

DPotter · 15/06/2024 18:21

In days of yore, niece got hold of a landline phone and dialled 99. First the DS knew about it, 2 policemen at the door checking all was OK as the call handler had heard a toddler's voice. They told my DS that the calls went thru on just 99, didn't need the 3rd 9 - it was set up that way as it took so long to dial 999.

probably different now as it's all touch button / screen

Whatnonsenseisthat · 30/06/2024 12:13

Oh wow so it's happened to lots of us then! Thank you for sharing all your stories! I was also expecting a telling off but nobody called me back or texted thankfully. We keep our phones out of reach now!

Thanks all :)
