Insect bite - photos

DD4 had this bite for a couple of days. It’s itchy, swollen, hot and feels like a bruise when I touch it. She has taken antihistamines but seems to be getting hotter. Should I seek medical advice to see if it’s infected or just wait a few more days? Thanks

If it's red and hot, it suggests it's infected. Pharmacy might be able to help.

I'd try a pharmacist as well - and in mean time follow https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/insect-bites-and-stings/ advice.

Anthisan Bite & Sting Cream is particularly affective I've found recently as started reacting badly to some bites.

However I followed all the NHS page advice and I've still sometimes ended up at GP for bites that needing antibiotics.

Draw a ring around the red part to see if it’s tracking. It looks inflamed and may well be infected so probably a visit to a pharmacist would be a good idea.

Looks like a normal reaction to a bite to me. An allergic reaction causes redness, heat and swelling so not necessarily infected. Just keep a close eye on it.

Draw around the redness in pen and head off to speak to a pharmacy. I ended up on some antibiotics after my infected spider bite. The pen lines were really helpful to know for sure if the redness was spreading.

It’s a horse fly bite.

Thank you all. I think we have the Boots Bite & Sting Relief Antihistamine cream. I will apply that and also draw a circle around (good tip) to see if redness is increasing.

Looks like a bite that's been scratched half to death! Hope poor little one gets some relief with the cream.

anunlikelyseahorse · 14/06/2024 20:13

I think that should be seen by someone op. It's four days old and not getting better, it's getting warmer to the touch, there is quite a marked red circle round it, and it's swollen. As pp said draw a ring around the red, I'm not a medic but an ahp, and if that was my dc I'd want that looked at tomorrow or sooner if the red spreads or your dd appears unwell / fever.

JackieGoodman · 14/06/2024 20:18

Go to a pharmacist tomorrow (obviously get it seen asap if it gets worse, red streaks, fever) but I think hot means its infected, regular bites aren't hot.

I had a bite last week and checked at pharmacy. Mine wasn't hot so was fine to just wait and see using antihistamine cream, almost gone now.

Try and get some hydrocortisone cream. I have skeeter syndrome so plenty of fluids, paracetamol and antihistamines! Poor little soul☹️

itsmehere1 · 14/06/2024 21:15

Yes will definitely get her seen at pharmacy tomorrow and then GP next week if it doesn’t get better. Thank you all
