Would anyone like to help me decide whether to go for this job?

I enjoy my work and there are lots of benefits including flexibility, not micromanaged, generally not too stressful. I have a sense of purpose and the work I do is meaningful and for an organisation that aligns with my ethics.
The issue is that it is for a not for profit organisation and the pay is low.

There is a job going that I definitely have the experience for and is more money. It might be challenging and stressful but could be just what I need as sometimes feel a bit stuck where I am because the job is satisfying and unstressful etc.

Kids going to uni soon so could definitely do with more money.

Do I give up what is quite a nice job for the unknown??

I have hardly ever gone for a job, been where I am ten years and ten years in the place before that. So I'm not sure if I need a kick up the bum or foolish to leave

Any ideas or perspectives welcome

Is the other job aligned to your values? Will you find meaning in it besides the paycheck?
That’s an aspect that’s important for me personally, and I do find that in some commercial organizations.

It would be meaningful but I don't know the culture there. It's basically part of social services. I would hate to work somewhere where I can't do the best for people in need because of massive caseloads or whatever. I also want to be working with people who actually care

It is really important to me that it is meaningful but important worried that I'm sticking around here forever and not trying anything else

How much more money/total package?

i don’t work in that field but would imagine social services would be highly pressured with insufficient resources.

Loopytiles · 14/06/2024 16:20

So in your shoes would not apply for that role but would keep looking

redskydarknight · 14/06/2024 16:21

I think it's good to take yourself out of your comfort zone every so often - and with children off to university it sounds like now is a good time.
There is nothing to be lost in at least applying for it and finding out more.

Working in any type of social services / public sector work is going to be relatively low pay, insufficient resources with the risk of redundancy. I would stick where you are for the moment due to the election, you are safe with your +2years employment history there so difficult to get rid of if funding is suddenly cut.

Meadowwild · 14/06/2024 16:30

Applying for it doesn;t mean you have to take it. You might find out more about it during the process and get a better idea of whether it's right for you.

I would always apply for a job that really appeals. Have turned some down in the past, if we can't agree on salary or because the more I learned about the company, the less I wanted the job.

I currently earn £26k and this would be £34k starting salary

No harm in applying and even interviewing for it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Yes that's true. But I'll have to do a cv and cover letters! Perhaps I'm just lazy

I fear I could end up even more confused about the right thing to do!

Well maybe if you are confused then it’s not for you at this time, which is also fine!

Slumberella · 14/06/2024 16:45

My perspective is that you've not got the job yet! Don't put yourself through the wringer when it's still a maybe. If you can stand the stress of applying etc then put your hat in the ring and then start to think through all this if you're offered an interview. It's very much an applicant's market. Good to start thinking about more money, I'd say. You don't need to commit yet!

Oblomov24 · 14/06/2024 17:20

Apply. But consider carefully before accepting. SS is under such pressure, caseloads etc, that all my friends who are retired SW'ers are saddened by the state it's in.
