Holiday ideas, 1A, 2 teens Inc wheelchair

Normally we go on holiday as a family with DH, me and 2 teens.
However we are having a much needed extension built and so not booked anything. I do want the teens to have a break but nit sure what to book.
Teen 1 is a wheelchair user so not going to fly anywhere.
I'm happy to drive for a few hours but not than 4 in one block.
Accommodation needs to be fully accessible.
Any ideas?

Would you consider self- catering? In the more traditional s/c agencies, you can search for accessible accommodation quite easily. Whereabouts are you and what is your budget? The Peak District has a few accessible places, and one in particular I can recommend highly.

I'm down south, near Oxford.
How much is there for teens in the peak district, most walks etc are not available to us as most paths are not accessible.

When you say wheelchair user:

Can they walk at all?

Can they transfer?

If they have a few steps then a lot of self catering cottages will be suitable.

A lot of what people will suggest depends on what they are interested in - I am a wheelchair user but can walk a few steps. I quite like a traditional seaside holiday and I love swimming so that works for me.

Might not work for yours.

London is possible to get around and a lot of premier inns have accessible rooms. You can get show tickets quite cheap - although again that depends on a bit of walking.

Hay on wye has lots of good second hand bookshops and some of them are wheelchair accessible.

Weymouth?

mindexplode · 14/06/2024 19:30

Not able to walk and he's getting to big for me to lift. Anywhere that's hilly is also a no as it's getting harder to get him up a hill.
We live close to London but maybe a couple of days there as a treat although I'm not sure the teens will still want to share a room with me.

Does anyone know any haven holidays that are flat to get around? We went to Exmouth last year and it was a 60 degree hill.

Can't advise on haven (but if anyone else can I'd be interested to know)

Does he have an electric or a manual? Manuals can be a git to push but most electrics can handle a bit of slope (probably not 60 degrees though)

Norfolk is pretty flat if that helps?

The Haven at Rockley Park near Poole might be worth a look, I haven’t been on the site but the immediate surroundings are fairly flat.

Also, have you considered CentreParcs? I think Elveden (West Suffolk) is fairly flat, from memory. I would expect them to be good with physical accessibility issues.

mindexplode · 14/06/2024 19:52

It's a manual and he's very independent so the flatter the better.
Unfortunately I don't have school holiday centre parks money, I looked at the ones in Europe but haven't driven abroad as the only adult yet, dh and I normally split it.

There are lovely accessible trails in the Peak District, converted from disused railway lines: Tissington, High Peak, and Monsal trails, and the Manifold Way. They go through beautiful limestone countryside and there are places where you can hire a bike. Maybe even disabled bike hire.

Accessible Derbyshire website may give you some other ideas.

Thank you @Keepingongoing I always assumed the peak district was all hills and never really looked at it. We did the Yorkshire dales and that was a bit of a nightmare
