I like to carry one for random photos of family etc. Have a 3mp one that's lasted a decade actually 2. Need to upgrade. Thanks

Is there a reason why you wouldn't just use your phone?

DingDongWitchDingDong · 14/06/2024 10:58

It's full. I love photos.

Phone with a good camera built in

Bjorkdidit · 14/06/2024 11:32

Do you not back up your photos to your google drive (or Apple equivalent)? Or get a new memory card?

DingDongWitchDingDong · 14/06/2024 11:42

Yeah, I suppose. I just love a camera.

I went camera shopping last week and was told most people use their phones now so they had very few simple cameras to sell anymore! You might be able to find something secondhand

chattyness · 14/06/2024 11:51

I too would love a simple camera, I don't like smartphones so I've got a simple PAYGO flip phone which does take quite good photos at 3mp but I'd like a wee bit higher spec so I can get truer colours .

DingDongWitchDingDong · 14/06/2024 11:54

That's what I'm after. Nothing high end as it's for odd shots.

you have far more control over the final image with a camera, most phone cameras have a fixed aperture for example.

Peckhampalace · 14/06/2024 12:06

Also interested as have recently realised that photos on my phone don't print as well as ones taken with my old camera.

DingDongWitchDingDong · 14/06/2024 12:07

I'm just a dinosaur lol.

I have a very expensive DSLR camera which I never use any more as my phone (iPhone 12 pro) takes such good photos. I back all my photos up to iCloud and Google photos, so only thumbnails are stored on my phone and they don't take up too much space (23,000 photos are using 11gb).

I would get out my camera if I wanted to do serious photography, but a cheap point and shoot would be nowhere near as good as my phone these days.

I tried an iPhone. It just wasn;t for me. I sold it to my late step-dad.

Something like this OP?

I haven't tried it so not a recommendation as such but I used to have a Nikon Coolpix which was very similar. If I'm reading the blurb right it looks as though you can charge it via USB without having to take the batteries out and change/charge separately which to me is a plus.

DingDongWitchDingDong · 14/06/2024 12:32

That looks grand x Thank you x

I've ordered one. Thanks @Mochudubh

Another vote for Nikon Coolpix!. Mine is over 10 years old and seemingly indestructible, and whilst I use my phone for photos quite a bit, the quality and flexibility of my wee camera is fantastic. Also as an outdoors person I see a lot of FB posts where people have found/lost phones in remote areas plus there's the battery life aspect too.

Go to a good shop which has secondhand cameras in the window. Ask them for advice and get the best you can afford. I had a simple one for just odd photos - it uses an out of date type of card, so I replaced it with an SD card one, which developed a problem with the battery door. I now use a DSLR. Or the phone.
Be clear in the shop what you want, having made sure it's an older bloke advising you, who won't be getting rid of some dreck that they can't shift. I would say you would need settings for portrait and landscape, bright light/dull weather and a flash. If they're good, they count on word of mouth, plus people coming back to upgrade, which is where the second hand stuff comes from. Get a spare SD card, and a change of rechargeable batteries.
Make sure the camera is a good make from a reliable source - ie Germany, Japan. Praktica, Nikon, Canon, Leica, Agfa, Fujifilm, Olympus, Pentax.
We had a good point and shoot one at school from Agfa, with free software. Discontinued unfortunately, and I can't recall what we ordered instead for the primary children to use.

I do like Nikon.

I am stuck between the two.
