What do you spend on a family holiday?

Hi all
I'm curious, what do most people budget on spending for a family holiday? I realise that this is a real privilege, and do sympathise that with the many families unable to get away. But I'd like to try to 'bench-mark' what most people spend on a two-week break. I'm trying to make a last minute plan for our family of four (two teenagers, so they're full price for most things). If you're going away for 10 days - 2 weeks, what are you spending? Not luxury, but not camping either!. ie holiday cottage in Cornwall, villa abroad, Mediteranean etc For context, household income £65k. Paid off the mortgage last year - but also aware we'll need to support two teens through uni soon. I'd like to know what similar families spend. Ta!

We’ve booked 10days half board in Spain (Costa Brava) in August for £3.2k -2 adults 2 primary school children in a 4* which includes flights and transfers. We were lucky enough to get a significant discount otherwise would have been looking at nearer £4k. Lunches will be sandwiches or picnic type stuff on the beach and we’ll be aiming to spend max £500 which for us is doable. Household income is £80k net.

Cottage in the UK by the sea for two weeks costs us £4000 for family of 5.

@AlwaysCloudyAtNoon they are 19 and 20 now. We've done it since I upped my game at work when they were 4 and 5. Just kept the tiny house and old cars and saved every spare penny into a special account. We plan as a family and spend the whole year researching and planning. They both say it has been the best aspect of our family life and when we have discussed making different choices they have been emphatic this is the priority. Even to the extent that when we were away last year we discussed that my income will drop in a few years as my health is not great they both suggested that they should pay their own way as soon as they finish uni. They already make significant contributions financially - DD19 paid for us all to do a 3 day trek in Thailand and DS paid for a tour of Chaing Rai and a Thai cookery course - they both also chip in and pick up drinks/food bills randomly.
I thought I was going to get a bollocking for being such a hedonist - thanks for the nice comments 😃

I love it. My dad was utterly obsessed with China and Chinese culture so we spent a large part of my childhood going to Singapore, Hong Kong and Mainland China. Once, memorably Dad had some itchy feet and took me for a long weekend to Singapore- Thursday out, Monday back.

I look back on this with great happiness and a very big sense of luckiness that this was my upbringing. I've worked hard to turn m y Dcs into travellers, because it is a very big thing for my emotional wellbeing. DS1 has autism and not great with being outside of his comfort zone but recently he said to me 'I love seeing new countries'. So I felt very happy.

For somewhere decent I'd budget £1k per person per week for flights hotel and meals.

RainyTulips · 13/06/2024 18:14

2 adults 1 child £3400 for a week full board in Croatia, last week of the summer holidays.

Hoping to stay within £4000 for drinks and a couple of lunches/trips out.

BeRealOrca · 13/06/2024 18:18

Family of 6 here, one tween and three under 10. We're going to a eurocamp on the coast in Spain in August. £1500 for two weeks. Prob another £1500 on flights, transport, airport parking etc and we usually budget for around £200 a day spending money. Some days we spend more and some less but averages around that. Not a fan of AI so we do a mix of cooking and eating out.

MrsTaytodarling · 13/06/2024 18:22

Interesting. Can I jump in and ask how much for 2 adults and 2 teens in London for 5 days where hotel and activities are already paid for?

User1974 · 13/06/2024 18:24

@Houseofdragonsisback ah sorry - I was being defensive because I expected a negative response I guess 😂
Rich people lie about what they spend ime. My brother is a very high earner and told DM his honeymoon was £6K but a quick google showed it was 5x that amount. He has a massive house, loads of cars, fancy clothes, holidays etc and carried loads of debt. Not what I'd chose but that's what he wants.

AnotherEmma · 13/06/2024 18:24

We don't spend crazy money on one holiday because 1. DH is not from this country so we do short visits to his country once or twice a year, which can cost up to £1k each time and 2. our children are 7 & 3 and really hard work so we have so far been reluctant to spend £££... it's disappointing enough to go on holiday and find the whole thing more stressful than enjoyable, even worse if you've spent a small fortune on it. I have been fantasising about an all inclusive with a kids club but my oldest is autistic and wouldn't go.. we might try it one year though and see how it goes.

We've already done 2 long weekends in DH's country this year. Our summer holiday is 10 days self-catering in a holiday park (similar to center parcs) in Europe, accommodation cost £2k and Eurotunnel cost £385, so that's £2385 before we pay for food and activities. I realise we are fortunate to be able to afford it. But it seems "cheap" compared to some of the prices I found when I was researching options! It is so much more expensive in the school holidays.

hopeishere · 13/06/2024 18:24

Last year France city and then a week on the coast about £5k

This year America £10k

Cottage in the Cotswolds about £2k (I refuse to stay anywhere not as nice or nicer than my own home)

spudnik1 · 13/06/2024 18:26

Last year we went on our first cruise ( first abroad holiday in 10 years) we spent 2.3k total 2 adults 1 child.
I also spend another £500 throughout the year on camping trips approx 4 a year.
This year, I am pregnant as so couldn't go on a cruise . We went tenerife at may half term b&b 5* fabulous hotel. And that was 3k for the hotel. A further £500 on eating out and spending money. We will not be camping this year.
We have spent a lot, but with a baby coming, we will not be having any holidays until they are 4.

Favouritefruits · 13/06/2024 18:27

I can’t afford a two week holiday but spend about 3k half board for two adults and two children.

So hard to say because the price of admission varies so much. Some of the fantastic big museums are free but other attractions are really expensive. And how well do you want to eat in the evening and at lunchtime?

MrsTaytodarling · 13/06/2024 18:29

Sorry, I mean we have attractions already booked and paid for and dont plan on doing paid stuff apart from that...food will be easygoing. Street food etc I'd say

TheChosenTwo · 13/06/2024 18:30

Main 2 week family holidays come in at usually around 10K, we’re basically 5 adults now but still have to go in school holidays as the youngest is still in school.
Flights less than 2K, usually about 1500 but just depends on where we’re going, villa around 5K then about 3 for spending. Oh, plus car. But roughly 10 give or take.
Somewhere in Europe, hot with a pool.

FawnFrenchieMum · 13/06/2024 18:37

Varies every year.

£5300 for a 14 night med cruise with full drinks package for 2 adults 1 teen this year. Summer holidays.

Last year 9 nights bed & breakfast in Majorca. EasyJet flights about £700.00 then I had saved free nights on hotels.com for only paid about £100 for that. That was four of us, two adults & two teens. May half term.

Year before £2500 14 nights AI in Greece term time, all four of us.

BeRealOrca · 13/06/2024 18:37

We also go to Isle Wight once a year for 4 or 5 nights. That's usually quite cheap and can often do the whole trip for less than £800

Houseofdragonsisback · 13/06/2024 18:44

@User1974 I think it’s fantastic you can spend as much as you do. We are in the income bracket I mentioned and I know my friends and family aren’t lying to me. We often have holidays together 😆

Not19foreverpullyourselftogether · 13/06/2024 20:09

We budget around 10% of our take home pay for holidays for family of 4, but it doesn’t go nearly as far as it used to, so may increase this slightly. I’m fine with cutting back in other areas like eating out, cars etc to prioritise this.

parentfodder · 13/06/2024 20:19

We pay around 500 pp for sc in May. Take 1500 spends

kirinm · 13/06/2024 20:22

We have an air BnB in the south of France. Flights and apartment for 10 days is £3k. I would expect us to spend at least £1k in eating out / feeding ourselves.

That sounds like a very good deal!

We had a 'big' holiday to Mexico for 2 weeks last year, for our anniversary, but took our 2 adult children too. We rented a car and stayed in a mix of lovely hotels and 3 bedroomed apartments.

The total cost including absolutely everything was just under £10k. But that is a one-off.

Previously we've driven to Belgium (Bruges, Waterloo and Brussels) for about £3,000 for 2 weeks all in for 4 of us; 2 weeks in Sicily (Taormina and Ortigia) was about £4,500.

A week in Iceland was exactly £5000 (absolutely everything on credit card).

Roadaheadclear · 13/06/2024 17:28

We spend one income on travel. It’s a lot, but that’s our thing. We could spend that on private school
fees but decided to travel instead.

Actual travel or AI holidays where you eat nothing but continent buffet/pizza and don't leave the resort? I'm curious because what I consider travel is not the same as others 😆

I might suggest one income goes on travel to my DH, I'm all for that idea!

Chickenuggetsticks · 13/06/2024 21:36

1 child about 3k for 10 days thats flight and tickets this year to somewhere close. We try to find something that has a separate living area so we can have some time together on holiday as well. But up to 5k I think.
