Buying a new build - how to style?!

I'm newly separated and I've bought a new build, ready for completion in a few months time. This is the first time I've had a house all to myself, and can make all the decisions about how to style, what to buy. My ex-husband was very controlling in these respects - I once bought some new coasters and he raged at me for weeks because I hadn't shown him a picture of them before I bought them - they were >£5.

So because I've lived like that for so long I've lost all confidence in what I actually want and all this freedom is overwhelming me. I like fairly simple, clean lines; I like to think I'm more classic than fashionable; I want it to look homely, inviting, cosy. I have a fairly good budget available. Where do I start?!

The interior walls will all be painted white by the builder. I've chosen not to use them for all the carpets and flooring as their costs were ridiculously high. I've literally got a blank canvas but I'm stumped on where to start... I need the power of mumsnet help!

I think Pinterest may be your friend. Search for something like new house decor, build a mood board from what you like in there and whittle it down to see if you can find a style / look that you like.

Visit somewhere like IKEA and take a look at their room styling for ideas.

Instagram should be helpful as well.

Get a selection of the cheaper house magazines. Chop up the ones you like and stick them on a piece of card or something

You should see your style/colour come through.

If you are scared of colour/wallpaper but are edging towards the dramatic then start somewhere small like a toilet or utility where you can be as mad as you like.

Am I too much of a wimp if I go fairly neutral on the big things (sofa, furniture), then bring in bolder colours on soft furnishings?

If you aren't sure what your style is then yes, have the big stuff as plainer, but maybe go plusher or design led.

Don't go grey sofa with red, teal or ochre accessories though!

Just one statement piece for each room perhaps so that you have something to hang the rest of the room from.

Fundamentally there is nothing wrong with having a fully neutral house. Or indeed a very colourful one.

Decide if you want a whole house cohesive look ( which might then dictate your flooring etc choices).

You could make a big impact with lighting for instance. And/or upgrade light switches/sockets and door handles. Which are quite small but can be impactful .
