Police visiting my old address asking for me - why?

GreenSparkle1 · 12/06/2024 20:38

I moved over 18 months ago. The new tenant at my old address messaged me today to say the police had been round this morning and were looking for me.

He told the police I didn't live there and they left - they only asked for me by first name and didn't ask any further questions. It was a single police officer in a marked car that visited.

I rang 101 this afternoon and asked them why the police were looking for me. The dispatcher said she was unable to disclose this information but she would pass my contact number over and ask for the officer to ring me. I asked her how long it would take the officer to contact me and she replied "I would hope fairly soon". No one has contacted me back.

I am pregnant (told this to the person on the phone) and I am so anxious with worry. I have never been in trouble with the police and I have no clue why they would be looking for me at an old address.

Whilst I lived at that address, I had problems with anti social behaviour which I reported but I have had trouble at my new address which I have reported as well - so I am unsure why they would go to my old address as I would like to think my up to date reports would bring them to my current address?

All my documents like driving licence are registered to my new address.

Any ideas, knowledge from police officers or those in the know or does anyone have any similar experiences? I am going out of my mind with worry.

Is your car registered to your new address? Do you have a relative or friend you haven't spoken to for a while who lives alone or otherwise isolated?

nobeans · 12/06/2024 20:40

Is it possible you have a stalker or do you have a partner who might have been abusive in the past or is there someone you might be next of kin of who could have died?

Livedandlearned · 12/06/2024 20:45

We had a thread almost exactly the same as this before.

I don't remember the end result though sorry!

Dead relative I think.

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 12/06/2024 20:51

Do all your family know where you now live?

Yes, my car registered to this address.
No relatives no and I can't think of friends who are isolated.

I had an abusive ex but that was many years ago now. Maybe 15+? He has tried to reach out to me several times on Facebook/Instagram to say sorry and stuff - last time was last year...
I can't think of any NOK who I am not in contact with.

I don't think the police keep a database of people's contact details, iyswim. So Sarah Smith at 1 Acacia Ave with antisocial neighbours in 2019 probably isn't linked with Sarah Smith at 25 West St with harassing neighbours in 2024. So it may be something to do with the old neighbours.

Or it might be someone has given them your details for some reason - next of kin to someone, witness to something, someone who would know the contact details of someone else they need to speak to - but they didn't have your new address.

(edit: typo)

Wouldn't even worry about it tbh, could be from something yrs ago & not remotely serious. DH who works in a RG uni had call at 3 am one night from police trying to trace a student...turned out to be a former student & for a very minor incident 4 yrs ago, hardly required a 3am wake up call so they got very short shrift!

Almost word for word! I had to triple-check the date and time.

Are you still on the electoral roll there? Could it have been a jury duty summons to your old address?

anonhop · 12/06/2024 22:22

Police came hounding our door with flashlights at 3am asking for DH. Saying a woman he knows has gone missing. He was sure he didn't know the woman.
Turns out about 10y previously, DH was mugged on a bus and the woman (fellow passenger) called the police with him and gave a statement. That was only record of the woman on the database + Police had interpreted it as her being with DH.
In fact, they didn't know each other & he didn't know her name.
Never found out what happened to her, but sad if the only person the police could trace was DH...

I'd try not to worry! If they "wanted" you, they'd have called back by now x

No, I am registered to vote at my new address. I have had letters this week to remind me to vote.

If you had something to worry about you would know, I would presume a relative or something like that

buffyslayer · 12/06/2024 22:36

I got a random call once asking if I knew someone called "Mrs Sarah my surname"

I did say "why you asking me?!" and he said because some people with my surname he wouldn't ring (anyone with a record) but that I had reported ASB before so I was a sort of "good citizen"

I didn't know them, I'm guessing perhaps they were found deceased and they were trying to track relatives

HollyFern1110 · 12/06/2024 22:41

I also remember the previous similar thread. With us, it was a deceased distant uncle. DH was totally unaware that he was his closest living relation which is in itself very sad. He barely knew him really.

Yes I did exactly the same as I too remember the previous thread.

LimeandCourgette · 12/06/2024 22:52

It could literally be about anything I'm afraid e.g. your car numberplates have been cloned, trying to identify potential witnesses to a crime, trying to track down a family member etc.
Unfortunately it's just a waiting game for the officer to find time to contact you again. Be prepared to wait.

Yes, me too.

I remember that the sad outcome of that particular thread was that a relative (that the OP had long since lost touch with) had been found deceased. Hopefully it's something far more trivial in this case.

determinedtomakethiswork · 12/06/2024 23:15

I would be really restless if I knew the police have been after me! I always have a really guilty conscience though. do you drive, OP? If so have you changed your address on your driver's license and vehicle registration?

GreenSparkle1 · 13/06/2024 22:42

Hello,

Thankfully the police rang me today. It was something related to a family member but it wasn't urgent thankfully and it was just keeping me in the loop about something! They went to my old address as they had tried other members and hadn't been able to contact them!

Thank you for last night. Being pregnant and stressed isn't great! Looking forward to a better night sleep tonight.

LimeandCourgette · 13/06/2024 23:05

Oh that's a relief. I'm glad it was resolved reasonably quickly for you. Sleep well!
