How did your type 2 diabetes start?

Just that really. What symptoms did you start with? What made you suspect type 2? Did you have any risk factors?

Thanks in advance

I had no idea at all. They picked up I was in the pre-diabetes range when doing a bunch of blood tests for something else.

LiterallyOnFire · 12/06/2024 14:51

I had a spinal injury. It was the enforced lack of activity I'm sure. I gained some weight over the following two years, but the blood sugar went south faster than the weight went on. There was a strong family history. None of us obese.

I've reversed it now so don't give up hope if you've been told you're (pre) diabetic.

LiterallyOnFire · 12/06/2024 14:52

Oh sorry you meant more "how did it present?" than "what precipitated it?"

Not very symptomatic at all. A couple of odd infections but not much else.

If I hadn't already been under medical care for other reasons, I'm sure it wouldn't have been diagnosed so quickly.

My mum had a problem reading and kept going to the opticians saying her glasses weren’t right, also waking up in the night and drinking 4 glasses of water etc. Finally her friend was running a community health check day and she was found to have type 2. Actually all classic symptoms!

Am805463 · 12/06/2024 14:59

I had a yearly blood test after having gestational diabetes three times and after showing as pre-diabetic for 3 years it tipped into type 2 diabetes two years ago. I’m 43.

MichaelBurnhamFan · 12/06/2024 15:03

I found out I may have by accident when paramedics did a finger prick (later confirmed), and thought I had no symptoms.

However it turned out that I did have symptoms.

I’m disabled. One of my disability symptoms is fatigue (classic type 2 symptom). I also started some treatment a few years before my type 2 diagnosis that I was warned would make me wee more. It made me wee a crazy amount but I didn’t realise it wasn’t expected. Sorted out my blood sugar improved both of those symptoms.

Friendofdennis · 12/06/2024 15:06

I recognised some of the signs. Thirst etc. My doctor told me it was progressive and inevitable complications would come my way. I wish at the time I had known about the research done by professor Roy Taylor funded by Diabetes Uk. It is possibly too late to put it into remission but any attempt to lose visceral fat will have benefits

Thank you all. I’m showing symptoms I think. Really thirsty, peeing a lot, very tired, weird vision. I’m 40 and have gained a couple of stone the last couple of years. I eat too much rubbish although do exercise a lot.

do I just book a blood test with the GP?

Well type 2 “Starts” for everyone with just eating excess carbs all the time.

Speak to your GP, but even better take matters into your own hands : First step = stop eating carbs. No sugar, no flour, no cereals, no rice, no potatoes, no bananas.

Unless of course you want to be on meds for the rest of your life and just get worse slowly.

EBearhug · 12/06/2024 15:25

No symptoms, just a round of bloods because I was 45 and hadn't seen the GP for some years.

Some Pharmacies also offer diabetes checks if GP appointments are heard to get.

LiterallyOnFire · 12/06/2024 15:27

HARD to get.

Thank you. I didn’t think of that. Might try that first.

While it's more likely to be T2 given what you've said, T1 can be diagnosed at any age and is a medical emergency. Don't delay.
Go to your pharmacy and get a finger prick test at least. Today!!
(I was diagnosed with Type 1 at 45 and very very poorly but still functioning)

That is not the truth of it at all, please stop spreading misinformation, in this day and age it is entirely unnecessary.
