Rome Colosseum tickets

Hi,
We are going to Rome in a few weeks and were told that it's better to book the tickets in advance to see the colosseum. I just wondered if anyone knows of the official website? Has anyone booked recently and can offer any advice? Also, if anyone has any general Rome recommendations that'd be great too. Thank you 😊

Wow that is confusing. I'm off to Rome in February and also want to know this.

DramaAlpaca · 12/06/2024 10:41

I think we used this one:

www.colosseum.rome-tickets.org

We were able to skip the queues.

Always find posts like this a bit weird. In the time it took you to post on here you could have googled the answer.

We went in October and booked a tour and was so glad we did as you skipped the line with the tour and the entry lines were massive - not as bad as the Vatican but still huge. Our tour guide was amazing too.

make sure you do the arena floor bit as you need certain tickets to get to that bit

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 12/06/2024 10:49

Definitely get a tour. I’m not clever enough to appreciate what I’m seeing without someone telling me. Our guide was great and pointed out lots of things we’d have missed if we were just using the audio guide.

https://colosseo.it/en/opening-times-and-tickets/ this is the official site. Book sooner rather than later as it does sell out quick.

Have a look at the night time tours available in the summer. I haven’t been on one but heard they’re incredible. Very atmospheric and much less crowded. Pricy though.

Sorry to be clear that’s the official government approved site for the basic tickets but I would highly recommend getting a tour via get your guide or viatour etc. We just chose one with good reviews that had availability and suited our budget.

And I find posts like yours very weird. Of course I Googled it, that's the first thing I did. And then faced with SO MANY options I came onto MN to ask others who have been and done this recently. If you haven't then I'm not even sure why you wasted your time responding.

Thank you to everyone else who responded. It's always good to hear about people's experiences. I would have never considered going at night but that sounds brilliant!

You couldn't find the official website using Google? 🤔

NotLikeTheOthers · 12/06/2024 13:55

We went this February but couldn't book the Coliseum because it was free entry on the Sunday we wanted to go. (I believe it's free for one Sunday a month). We got there early Sunday morning, queue was massive. But we went to the little square by the Arch of Constantine and there are official agents there selling tours - (they do look a big dodgy/ticket tout-ish!). We paid 20 euros each for a guided tour which we waited only about 20 minutes for. It's all above board - you pay, then you get walked round to a ticket booth to collect your ticket, then you do the walk around with headphones it etc. Great experience.

EwwSprouts · 12/06/2024 13:55

You don't need a guide the cheaper option is the hand held audio tour. If you are going at the beginning of the month the first Sunday is always free entry.

EwwSprouts · 12/06/2024 13:57

Cross post! We got there 10 minutes before opening and the queue was only about 40 people.

Sunshineonasameyday · 12/06/2024 13:58

Book onto a tour, unlike British sites of historical interest there is very little in the way of signage or things to read (or wasn't when I went).

chickenpieandchips · 12/06/2024 13:58

We got the official tickets. I phoned up and got us attic tickets so great view as it didn't work online. Kids were free. We then got the audio guide. The kids were happy with the length and what we learnt.
If you want to go into the actual arena I think you need to book a tour as official tickets get snapped up.

To be fair it doesn’t make it all that obvious which one is the €18 tickets official site. All the tour companies want you to book with them and they’ll all claim they’re the official one and the best. There are a few scam sites out there too that I know people have been stung by. It seems an obvious question but it’s actually a sensible one.

eosmum · 12/06/2024 18:14

Definitely book, we missed out by not. St Ignatius church has the most amazing ceiling painting, not crowded and free, it was near the Piazza Navona I think. I noticed Piazza Navona was boarded up during the half marathon, but might be security rather than works but I'd check that out.

D20 · 12/06/2024 18:20

We chose a night tour including underground and had the place to ourselves. It was expensive but totally worth it. We used Get Your Guide app. We also did a walking tour and Vatican tour with them. Obviously the quality depends on the guide but I’d use them again 100%.

We went on a tour and so thankful we did. Was great, there isn’t much info around the colosseum and we learnt so much from the guide. Was a super small tour maybe 15 people. Would really recommend. We did however buy tickets online before we went and they managed to exchange them for the tour tickets

autumn1610 · 12/06/2024 18:23

Oh and last time I went you had to have tickets for the pantheon which you didn’t the first time I went

D20 · 12/06/2024 18:24

Oh and for me the Baths of Caracalla were one of the best (and cheapest) attractions to visit. We didn’t get a guide for that one.

beingoffwork · 12/06/2024 18:40

We also used Get Your Guide. Totally legit and handy to have for the other attractions too

somethingwickedlivesnextdoor · 12/06/2024 21:24

This is the official ticket website: www.coopculture.it/en/city/rome/

We got tickets for the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill from them. 18 euros each.

You can hire headsets inside the Colosseum for about €5 each.
