A day in Canterbury

Have an unexpected day in Canterbury with my 10 year old son, never been before and don't know the area at all. We will be travelling by train/foot so needs to be city centre, is the Roman museum good for children? Any other suggestions would be welcome!

There is a free art (and other things) museum that is free and full of interesting objects - it's called The Beaney, on the main shopping street.

I also recommend the Mexican restaurant Café des Amis.

If he learns the story about Thomas a becket then seeing the steps in the cathedral might satisfy a gory itch. To the left of the cathedral gates (as you face the gates) there was quite a fun ice cream shop a few doors down. Not tried the boats but that might also be fun.

The river punting is lovely, if you fancy it!

The Roman Museum is great. A lot of interactive bits. Second the Beany House. The toy exhibits on the first floor are great and you can play with lots of it.

Westgate Gardens is a lovely park if it's a nice day.

The Beany museum.

Also toddlers cove is great. Ignore the name, it is just a big playground so all ages would enjoy it.
