Hi,
Please tell me what it's like to live in the Ribble valley or South Ribble District
Thank you 😊👍

Both very different. Ribble Valley generally more expensive, South Ribble a very diverse area in terms of housing and environment.

Ribble valley is lovely - lots of lovely villages / hamlets, lovely pubs and walks, local small businesses and restaurants, it's a great area to live. I'm quite local and have lots of friends there - love it!

Ribble Valley is lovely. It’s a great place to live. I’ve been living there for a couple of years now. I’m from a town nearby but had been in Yorkshire for over 20 years. Wish we’d moved here sooner. Great schools, loads going on at weekends, beautiful scenery and great pubs and restaurants.

I’m drinking my coffee while enjoying my view of the Forest of Bowland.

We get a little bit more rain because of the precipitation but I like the rain anyway.

Ribble Valley is beautiful. Gorgeous countryside, great places to eat and drink, excellent schools, independent shops, easy enough to get into Manchester. Can highly recommend it.

Hi @ThatPlumPoster where abouts in South Ribble were you thinking of? I live in Penwortham, love it. Great high street, strong community, loads of social groups, and nice countryside - although I will admit not quite as pretty as the lovely Ribble Valley.

BrandNewBicep · 12/06/2024 21:14

I don't think there are any 'rough' areas in Altrincham generally. There are lots of semis in the suburbs and plenty of 'posh' parts plus lots of apartments. The town centre has been improved, but it isn't what it once was, but then this is true of most town centres nowadays. The market is good with good food and drink and nice bars and restaurants around it. The main road isn't all that, but it isn't awful.

Many good schools which are apparently over subscribed. You have Dunham Park (NT) which is lovely for walks and the surrounding countryside is great.

Obviously, I remember Altrincham from my childhood when it was a destination place to go shopping. I wouldn't make a special journey for a day trip to Altrincham these days, but it is pleasant. The Ribble Valley is much nicer IMHO.

Thank you so much ! I love the look of Ribble valley but I feel like it could get a little isolating because it's mostly villages but I might be wrong !

Penwortham is lovely. Like PP said, there’s a nice community, great bars and cafes, a selection of outstanding schools, and handy for the station etc. Also a Booths and decent shops.
Longton is also lovely in South Ribble - more villagey than Penwortham but with nice places to eat, and another Booths! A nature reserve for walks.

What is it you want from an area OP?

Ribble Valley is posher and more countrified.

Thank you penwortham sounds really good with more going on than the Ribble valley it seems. I want somewhere with a mix of alot of things to do but also a little bit countryside, so I'm either thinking South Ribble, maybe Ribble valley or Altrincham (and some places around it)

I live in Penwortham and love it. There are nice walks down the river if you just want to step out of your front door or you can be in Windermere in an hour.
On the main high street (the strip, as locals call it!) there are a bunch of independent bars, a couple of yoga studios, an arts centre where they have films, book clubs etc. and all the usual hairdressers, estate agents etc.
There are annual events too, like the gala, Penwortham Live which is a music festival across loads of venues, the firework display, Christmas market.

Depending where you live it’s £5-8 from the city centre or railway station in a taxi.

I don’t know Altrincham to compare it to but I’m very happy here.

BrandNewBicep · 13/06/2024 06:59

I would say that Altrincham has a slightly more sophisticated/cosmopolitan feel to it. Its closer to Manchester, which is great for eating/drinking/shopping. Residents of Altrincham maybe work in Manchester, you have the BBC crowd now. I would say if you are youngish you may prefer Altrincham. When I first moved to the Ribble Valley, I spent many years thinking how much I wanted to return to Altrincham. But I suppose as I have got older, the Ribble Valley is a better fit for me now.

SouthRibble · 13/06/2024 07:24

I guess budget may be the deciding factor, are you buying or renting? Some parts of Ribble Valley is very expensive to buy/rent in.

Do you have school age kids to consider schools for. Are you moving with a WFH job or will you need to find a new one? Sorry lots of questions @ThatPlumPoster
