Help with blood test results.

Hello,

I'm in Northern Ireland and we've only just begun having access to test results online, previously I've been told my results are all "normal" but I've recently received log-in's for the account and read through the results and three of them are not in normal range. Please can anyone tell me why they would say they're fine when they're not? Is it because each one is only raised slightly? All 3 are related to potential anemia which I'm worried about because I have been having digestive issues for over a year now but my Qfit test came back within normal range however if I potentially have anemia I should be referred to gastro right? (I am referred but non urgent wait-list and been on it for 12 months already with another 18 months wait to go). I have health anxiety (receiving treatment) and really freaking out now.

Sorry I was meant to put this into general health and don't know how to move it.

I can't really help on interpreting your results, sorry, other than to say haemoglobin would usually be low if you're anaemic.
Have you had a blood test for Coeliac Disease (whilst eating lots of foods that have gluten)? More info on coeliac.org.uk.

Haemoglobin is low in anaemia yours is in slightly higher range but no so high it makes you suspicious of any other high haemoglobin disorders , I’d say they all appear fine . No major red flags .

I'm not a specialist but they are only marginally high so don't worry. Is there a reason you were having them done?

Maybe give your GP a call to ease your worries.

Nogodsnomasters · 11/06/2024 18:27

I had them done because of digestive issues and being discovered I only have one kidney this year.

I'm sure a clever haematologist will be along soon, but as a GP I wouldn't bat an eyelid at these results. Your Hb is normal - indeed, slightly higher than normal - so you're not anaemic. Your MCV is normal, so your red cells are a normal size. MCH and MCHC are of basically no clinical significance whatsoever in my world. I would have filed this as OK, albeit with a comment explaining why I wasn't worried.

If you are worried, speak to your doctor; they know your background and symptoms.

Oh thank you very much, that is very kind of you to respond. The doctor at the time just told me the results were normal which I believed until I was given access to this online portal thing today and saw 3 of them saying high and started freaking out.

@CakeIsNotAvailable can I ask why those two are of no clinical significance and if no why do they do them? When I Google it all sorts of scary things come up like polycythemia and low blood oxygen etc. My Sp02 has always been normal if that's any indication.

I'm not sure. Perhaps they're useful if you've got other abnormalities and end up under a haematologist?! Honestly, as a GP, if a patient has a normal Hb, MCV, WCC, neutrophil count and platelet count, I'm not worried!

EalingLucy · 05/08/2024 22:51

@CakeIsNotAvailable please can I ask you what you would worry about with high platelets? I have had them for years and no one ever seems to know why. Also high mch, high mchc, low mpv. I’ve read this could be rheumatoid arthritis. Is that correct? It does run in my family :-/
