Is anybody awake, I'm freaking out

Just nodding off to sleep and I woke up my self up with a little gasp, tried to go sleep and this happened another 2 or 3 times. Woke up feeling a little gasp in my throat. WTH is this. Now I'm too scared to go back to sleep in case I stop breathing or die in my sleep or something, literally never experience something so bizarre. Should I be worried.?

I get this pretty much 2/3 times a week. I've had it so bad I literally couldn't breathe AT ALL. It's scary but now I am familiar, when it happens to me (because it goes on for about 10 seconds) I try not to freak out but I attempt to breathe through my nose ... some times works, sometimes I end up coughing a lot. I've never been to the doc because - what's the point.

Well the point would be the doctor would investigate, hopefully find the cause and treat it. It could well be asleep apnea which has lots of associated very poor health outcomes but can fairly easily be diagnosed and treated.

Very weird thing to conclude that yhere wouldn't be any point in going to a doctor when you feel like you can't breathe! Breathing is quite an important function of the body!

I get this when my allergies and sinusitis is bad. I wake up choking on post nasal drip fluids.

Luddite26 · 11/06/2024 06:56

Could you have hayfever? I get this at this time of year and get asthma with hayfever only at this time. Hope you are ok.its scary trying to breathe when nobody is there.x

Dibbydoos · 11/06/2024 07:12

Its natural as I understand it.

The body has a little anxiety that its dying so we wake up.

Youre not dying or going to die.

Set a timer for 10mins, close your eyes, breath normally dont force anything. If you get thoughts push them away, all of them keep youre mind blank. If you get an itch ignore it. Dont move.

Those 10mins of zen meditation should have removed your anxiety.

I hope you can now sleep xxx

Do you need to lose a bit of weight? That's most commonly associated with sleep apnoea.

Cadela · 11/06/2024 08:09

This is exactly like my nocturnal seizures - probably doesn’t help and the likelihood is that it’s not epilepsy but it wouldn’t hurt getting a gp appointment.

vitahelp · 11/06/2024 08:16

I hope you are ok now OP. I have had this too, only in the past 6 months or so (I'm late 30s). It usually happens when I'm first falling asleep, I don't really notice it after this - unless I'm in a deeper sleep by then and just don't remember.

Triselly · 11/06/2024 08:27

I thought I’d mention as no one has mentioned so far - but does your bedroom have any mould growing in it?

When I was a bit younger I used to wake up not being able to breathe in the night (not overweight or hay fever) and it was only when I discovered a big patch of black mould behind my bed that I managed to sort the problem.

Rosejinkyb · 11/06/2024 08:38

Have you got acid reflux op?

pinkwaterbottle9 · 11/06/2024 08:39

I get this when my iron levels are low

OhHelloMiss · 11/06/2024 08:43

It's weird

I get this sometimes op

.... the gasp/panic and the mucous in throat. Trying to constantly swallow but it feels almost swollen

I have to get up and go downstairs. Sit upright. As another poster suggested, any weight to lose?

Thanks everyone for your comments. I ended up dropping off about 4am and woke around 30 mins ago. Don't feel too shattered considering?!
I do have weight to lose which I have been working on since January (two stone down) although I've halfway progress as of late..I do suffer with a little hay fever, and the occasional post nasal drip, and we do have a bit of mould on our room- not loads.. we had a roof leak which is fixed now but still waiting for landlord to come paint over the marks of where it was on a small corner. And I do suffer with acid too.. so I guess I've had my answers!!
It was horrible. The most bizarre thing which has never happened before!

If maybe get it checked out if it’s different for you op.

Rosejinkyb · 11/06/2024 20:22

Don’t freak out though. Just saying maybe get advice if different. Could be stress, acid or anaemia but none of us know your full history. Good luck.

Did you take any medicine containing an opioid before bed? (Eg codeine). That can cause apnea.

cathyburke · 11/06/2024 22:34

I had this twice after my c section a couple of years ago, literally woke up gasping for air and it terrified me! Has never happened since. Hope you have a better nights sleep tonight!

I get this when my allergies and sinusitis is bad. I wake up choking on post nasal drip fluids.

I get the same way. I take an antihistamine to help dry up the sinuses from the constant drip and it works well.

SallyWD · 12/06/2024 08:25

TiredAllTheTimeMum · 11/06/2024 02:12

I also think I've got a bad case of post nasal drip which also might be contributing but who knows.

Was your throat dry? I often get this. I wake up gasping and have to drink water.
