Going on someone else's car insurance?

Driving24 · 10/06/2024 12:34

I'm looking at car insurance for DD but the cost us near impossible is coming up a 3000+ I have never driven so can't help het out in that way .

She has a long term friend who has offered to put her on his insurance. I'm not sure how that works or if its a good idea ? Can dd still have her own car ? Or does it just mean she can drive his car?

If it's not a legitimate sharing of a car / insurance then I'm sure it's something called "fronting" or similar, which is fraud and if they find out then you get your insurance cancelled which can make it so hard in future to get insured, where you put a more experienced driver on to reduce cost but they're not actually a driver of the car.

You can be on someone's insurance to drive their car, I'm a named driver on my husbands insurance as he is on mine, so we're able to drive each others cars, however we're both the "main driver" of our respective cars.

Is the suggestion to add him as a named driver to your daughter's policy to reduce the cost?

I don't know. I don't know what I'm talking about 🤣

Definitely not trying to do anything illegal. I'm not fully understanding what DD friend is offering . Maybe it would mean the car would have to be in his name and he would be the named insure and she gets added to the insurance and she can then drive the car.

This would be fronting and technically illegal, if she had an accident and the insurance company found out they would refuse to pay out.

What she can do is take our insurance in her name and add him as a named driver to her insurance, if he has more experience then it would most likely bring the cost of the insurance down.

Thank you. When we have been looking i did see a bit where it says add named driver . I will make sure this is what he's offering thank you .

It's called fronting and is illegal

Are you going on comparison websites? My son really struggled to get insurance recently, all quotes were coming up £3000-£7000 a year which was ridiculous.

He phoned one insurance company and got a really decent price, so went with that.

It's true what others are saying about fronting, you can no longer do that unfortunately.

gleefulstar · 10/06/2024 13:42

Are you sure the friend isn't offering to go on your DC's insurance as a named driver? This often brings the cost down if the named driver is the right age and has no points etc.

Marmalade do a "bolt on" insurance for young people on an already insured car. So it would be a separate policy in her name on his car.
(If she had to claim for an accident it would not affect his insurance.)
This policy would give her the start of a no claims discount in her name for the following year & reduce the cost of her next insurance policy.

Ah no that does not work as she needs her own car.

Is there a parent/relative who can go on as a named driver rather than the friend? As long as she is named as the main driver it is not "fronting".

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/06/2024 15:25

Both my dds used Admiral for their first year's insurance.

Carebearsonmybed · 10/06/2024 16:33

Being named on someone else's insurance means there is comprehensive cover not just 3rd party.

I am named on both my parents car insurance's even though I only drive them for appointments/ emergencies/ servicing etc.

But I do have my own insurance for my car.

Most kids/ learners go on their parents insurance which is a lot cheaper than on their own (as you've seen).

Can she go on another relative's?

The alternative is just driving in the teachers car.

New drivers can also get a black box to cut costs.

Boomer55 · 10/06/2024 16:59

My GCs all had this. A year of it being horrendously high, but they had a black box fitted, drove sensibly, and it came down the second year.

Best to do things honestly.

mitogoshi · 10/06/2024 17:09

If it's her car you can legitimately insure it on her name and add another adult but what is illegal is to pretend it's his car and she's just a named driver

That's what I'm exploring We don't want to do anything against the law that's pointless.

I'm now thinking insurance in her own name and car in her name. But im not sure than adding another more experience driver to her insurance would actually bring it down.

As everyone has said. If she needs her own car, she needs her own insurance.

Many of us have found that adding ourselves on to our dcs' insurance as a named, additional driver, has brought their premium down. Potentially that is what the friend is offering ?

Possibly. I did say several times she's not going to do anything against the law. I did not know if he had meant for her to go on his insurance and drive his car . Or if it was his to go on her insurance with her car.

But either way she won't be wanting to drive his car . It would be way to powerful for her. And she would not want that responsibility or the general restrictions. So she needs to sort herself out basically

DuesToTheDirt · 10/06/2024 17:49

DD's insurance is slightly less because the car is owned by me rather than her. I have always owned the car, but she became the main driver and is insured as such. I was going to transfer the owndership to her, but then we realised that would increase the insurance, so I've retained ownership. So that's another variable to consider.

Tracker1234 · 10/06/2024 17:51

I know you can have another driver on the same policy who doesnt live at the same address. I have one son still at home and he has insurance in his name and my other son is a named driver and older with a clear claim history at another address.

It does give cheaper cover most of the time and rather than call them definitely look at comparison sites online before you call anyone!
