If you like eating hard boiled eggs but can't stand the shell peeling faff, try this, it's life changing!

Bash the shell a bit all the way round, slice the egg in two lengthways using a sharp knife and scoop out the egg from both halves using a tablespoon like you would an avocado.
It takes seconds.
You're welcome!

I started buying organic eggs.
Haven't had this problem since. The membrane separates easily.
It must be something to do with how the hens are cared for (food etc)?

thats interesting. I find that as eggs get nearer to their sell by date they’re harder to peel.

had the opposite with non supermarket ones , really hard to peel and I assumed perhaps wrongly that they’d been around for longer.

Was just coming on to say this and @flatwhiteinabucket has beaten me to it! I always have to forewarn people if I give them eggs from one of my girls!

Ah just posted the exact same thing before reading this! I suppose one could do the egg freshness floating test and then older ones use for cooking or scrambling.

Do shake it too hard, I did and ended up with scrambled egg with mixed shell!

Sorry link doesn't seem to work ( I put 'peeling a hard boiled egg trick' into YouTube.

I also put them in cold water, then when I want to peel them I just roll them on the bench a couple of times and the shell just falls off. Pretty sure I got the tip from MN.

Edited

Yeah exactly it just pretty much falls off, I don’t understand the angst people have about it being a faff 🤣

BardsAreAssholes · 10/06/2024 11:10

I think @Elieza ’s eggs are older than she might think. Organic fresh eggs are no easier than regular fresh eggs of the same age.

@Girlwithapple , @flatwhiteinabucket and @TorroFerney are right. It’s all about the age of the egg.

There are processes that can make peeling an egg easier - @grannycake ’s Instant Pot is great for that, and piercing the egg.

Once it’s cooked, rolling until the shell is a mosaic of tiny bits as @EatCrow says is great for everything except a fresh (under 4 days old) egg.

But for just boiling an egg in a pan, age is everything.

So instead of tapping a couple of times to crack the shell then taking maybe up to 10 seconds to peel it while holding it over the bin, I now have to make sure it’s cracked all the way round then get out a knife, board and a teaspoon, chop it open, pick all the broken bits of shell off the egg, scrape the shell into the bin, then wash up and put away the knife, board and spoon?

Fresher eggs are harder to 'peel'

The older they are, the easier it gets.

Looooong time chicken keeper.

Yep, was just going to say this

Do a video of you peeling it in 10 seconds and stick it up on YouTube?

Totally agree here......my son brings me a tray of eggs home from his job and they are a beast to get the shells off without wasting egg aswell!!!

I just put them in cold water once boiled, tap the shells all over and it just comes off in seconds, I don’t understand why there’s all this chat about ways to make it easier, peeling eggs is really easy anyway.

Same!

I had a boiled egg today for my lunch, and ok, it might have taken 12 or even 15 seconds, but I don't have a board, knife and spoon to wash up!

I also don't have a youtube channel. 🙄

MagpiePi · 10/06/2024 14:31

Apologies if I’m coming across as a bit sneery, but an alternative way to peel a boiled egg is hardly life changing.

Losing both legs in a car accident or getting a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer or winning the lottery are life changing.

WittiestUsernameEver · 10/06/2024 20:12

Ok

I just tested the cut it in half and scoop. Except I just realised, I didn't pre-bash.
Was marginally quicker than the good old roll and peel. But not sure I am convinced to change though.

But my egg sandwich was delicious 😋 😋

Well, I'm not inviting you to parties.

Cook your hardboiled eggs. When done, drain the hot water out of the saucepan, roll the eggs around hard, so the shells crack, then fill the saucepan with cold water. Leave till cool enough to handle the eggs. The water will have slipped under the internal membrane and the shell will slip off easily. Dry them and use.

Kleptronic · 10/06/2024 21:07

Bash the big end a little, then shove a teaspoon in between the egg and the membrane, the shell comes right off.

Agreed, it takes seconds I don’t understand what all the chat about peeling eggs is about! It’s really quick & easy I don’t know why people make such a fuss about it 🤣

gingergiraffe · 10/06/2024 22:15

All eggs contain an air space between the membrane and shell. As the egg ages, liquid evaporates and the air space gets bigger. If you hard boil an egg and remove the shell from an older egg, the egg has a big ‘dip’ in it.
So, if there is more air between the membrane and the shell, as in an older egg, it is easier to remove the shell.
I can remember taking very fresh eggs from our chickens to a cookery lesson to make stuffed eggs. So much ‘white’ stuck to the shell when removing they were not very successful!
Plunging hard boiled eggs into cold water helps stop a chemical reaction between the whites and the yolks which creates a bluish colour around the yolks.

I don’t have Youtube but next time I peel an egg I’m 100% going to film it because I don’t get what the palaver is about it (and I’m curious if I can do it in 10 seconds 😂)

It is the assertion that it is 'life changing' that is daft.

Unless you earn your living from peeling boiled eggs for 8 hours a day, who's life is devastated by having to spend a few seconds more peeling a boiled egg?
