Do you wash everything at 30?

It seems pretty much everything now says to wash at 30°.
Do you follow this, and are you finding clothes are still stained/ have odours? Or that your washing machine smells?
I am wondering if washing on a 40° instead will solve this or whether it will ruin things.
I'm not sure if the 30° is for environmental reasons or because so much clothing is particularly delicate lately.
I do service washes and the odd hotter wash for towels etc, and it seems to make no difference what products I use.
Any wisdom to share please?

I use a spray for armpit smells for my sports tops and use laundry sanitiser if I'm washing sports wear. I dont often use 30⁹C and mostly wash at 40⁰C

Can you recommend the spray you use? We have to use fairy, due to DCs eczema, but it’s not cutting it on the sports kit

I do everything at 40 pretty much unless delicates.
Towels & bedding at 60. No idea if that's right or wrong either but that's what I do.

Same

Everything at 30 apart from whites which go on at 40. No smells & all comes up lovely & clean.

I did find my machine smelled when I used liquid detergent. Now I use powder it’s totally fine.

Me too, I don’t get particularly smelly or dirty so apart from underwear, bedding and towels (40° bio powder) everything else is at 30°.
I seem to have got to 70 without succumbing to some lurgy or disease so must be doing something right!

WannabeMathematician · 09/06/2024 19:11

I often wash at 20 but I’ll do what every kind of on wash I think is needed to get my clothes clean. Anywhere from 20-90.

I find that my period underwear looses its elasticity if it’s washed on anything higher than 20 so that’s helped to keep the temperatures down. I also think my skin is quite robust compared to others, I’ve not have any problems with bio laundry detergent for example.

40 if it’s dirty
30 just needs freshing up
towels 60

Same!

MaryFuckingFerguson · 09/06/2024 19:13

We wash most things at 40, but bed sheets and towels at 60.

TootGoesTheOwl · 09/06/2024 19:15

Everything at 40, towels, bedding the lot.
I have started adding the dettol laundry disinfectant as my husband has a dirty job and we have dogs so whilst everything was clean I felt it could be fresher, it seems to have done the trick and everything smells beautiful.

TheDandyLion · 09/06/2024 19:16

30 or 40. No point going higher than that because the hotter temperature destroys the enzymes in biological powder and makes it less effective.

GameOfJones · 09/06/2024 19:21

Almost everything goes on a 40 degree eco wash, including bedding and towels. If I'm washing anything particularly dirty or stained, which isn't often I'd put it on a 50 degree cotton wash.

The only things I wash at 30 are delicates/knitwear on the hand wash cycle.

90 degree hot wash in an empty machine with a capful of zoflora once a month to keep it clean and smelling fresh.

Screamingabdabz · 09/06/2024 19:28

40 - most things
60 - towels/bedding/tea towels/ underwear (wash underwear separately to tea towels)

I only use 30 for a ‘freshen up’ where something isn’t dirty but needs a quick fresh up.

Upallnight2 · 09/06/2024 19:32

No because I was finding thing were still smelling sweaty etc. I do at least 40, 60 if it's a particularly smelly load (fousty towels, DSs smelly undies, sweaty t shirts etc)

reluctantbrit · 09/06/2024 19:39

I grew up with 30, 60 and 90 degrees.

Apart from bedding, towels and underwear, which I now do at 60, everything goes in at 30. 90 only when I have a bug in the house and then it also gets a disinfection run.

The smell is more an issue to be solved by detergent than temperature. Everything with BO (gym clothes, DD’s school stuff) gets a wash with bio detergent, normal clothes non-bio.

My machine has extra setting for wool or wool blend items where the spin cycle is less and it replaced my handwashing.

echt · 09/06/2024 19:44

Everything on cold except tea towels, dishcloths and the like.

Happyher · 09/06/2024 19:47

I wash most things at 40. Only use 30 when something just needs a freshen up and I can use the quick wash. I think clothes still smell unclean if you wash at 30

WappityWabbit · 09/06/2024 19:53

I wash most things at 30° and towels and bedding at 40°.

I haven't washed anything at 60° in years and I'm ancient and very healthy! 🤔

Franticbutterfly · 09/06/2024 20:05

No way. I do a long 40 or a quick 60c wash. Don't believe anything gets clean at 30, my family are way too mucky/smelly to wash cooler (my clothes would probably be ok though - not undies though 🤮).

K0OLA1D · 09/06/2024 20:06

Everything goes on a quick 40 apart from towels and bedding which goes on a quick 60. Occasionally I'll put my towels on a quick 90 to give the washer a good blast too.

icelollycraving · 09/06/2024 20:07

Delicates at 30, colours and darks at 40, towels, kitchen cloths and bedding at 60.

Kinshipug · 09/06/2024 20:08

No. Almost everything gets washed at 60 here. Trial and error over the years, with 3 small boys, plus our gym clothes, DHs tube commute germs, we have lots of very dirty washing. This way can chuck anything in and all comes out clean every time.
Some people definitely develop nose blindness to their inaquately laundered clothing...

seensome · 09/06/2024 20:11

Hardy anything at 30 unless it's delicate, normal washing goes on at 40-50 and towels/bedding at 60

Favouritefruits · 09/06/2024 20:13

I wash everything at 40 apart from towels and bedding which goes on at 60!

jlox · 09/06/2024 20:14

Everything at 40. Towels and bedding and 60.

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/06/2024 20:20

Only woollens.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/06/2024 20:21

Clothes yes. Towels and bedding at 60.
