Car insurance questions.

I am looking at car insurance this afternoon. I am asking here as call centres aren’t open.

I no longer have my company car. DH and I have a joint car. We both paid for it. V5 is in his name, insurance policy is in his name and I am a named driver. DH also has a little run around which he uses solely to take to and from work. He paid for it, v5 is in his name and he is the policy holder. I am not a named driver on it.

I am now becoming the main driver of “our” car. The insurance is due for renewal now. What I can’t work is out is if the car can remain as it is with me being a named driver but also a main driver (quotes have asked me this) or, if I’d be better transferring the v5 to my name and starting a new insurance policy in my name with DH as a named driver? Insurance comparisons sites seem ok with DH being the registered keeper and policy holder but with me down as the main driver but I am not sure as I have read fronting posts on here before that concern me.

Hope that makes sense! Thanks.

Fronting is where you put an older or more experienced driver as the main driver to lower the premiums where in reality the younger (usually) less experienced driver is actually the main driver. In your case it won't be an issue having you as the main driver and the v5 still being in your husbands name. It's very common with couples. Don't change the v5 to your name, you'll be adding another owner to it and it's not necessary.

You can be the main driver while being a policy holder. Not sure why you'd not be a named driver on his runabout, but that's up to him I suppose. I'd have thought this sort of situation is what multicar insurance was designed for. Forgive my ignorance.

DW's car is registered in her name (V5) but it is insured in my name, with her as the main user and a named driver.

This was because, for some bizarre reason it was cheaper this way, even she has been driving for longer than me, and has no claims wheresas I have 3 (2 non fault).

If you start a policy in your name, you may not be able to use any no claims discount, although the current company you are a named driver with might honour this.

As long as the insurance company have the correct details (on compare the market etc they always ask who is the owner, who is the policy holder, who is the main user etc, which we answer truthfully) then it should be ok

Should - I worked in insurance for 12 and IMHO insurers will find a way to refuse/reduce a claim if they can. Its the main reason I left the industry.

Do you have 0 no claims bonus? (You don't earn one on a company car or as a named driver)

Not necessarily true. I was allowed to transfer 9 years NCD from my company car to my personal policy with a letter from my fleet manager.

Some companies with also honour NCD that a named driver has if the named driver takes out their own policy with the same company. I think, off the top of my head, Tesco was one that did.

I have 0 no claims due to my company car and the firm’s policy in this.

The registered keeper is irrelevant. My car is registered to my husband. My son's car to me and DHS car to himself.

As long as you are honest about main driver it's not fronting.
