Fair split of costs for short break away

We are planning a last minute UK trip. We are a family of 4 and have family that want to come too which consists of 2 further adults and a dog. The extended family cannot stay for 7 days and we would need to book larger accommodation to accommodate them. We are looking at holiday cottages. We would only need 2 double beds or 1 double and a twin. But with them coming too they need separate rooms and it has to accommodate their dog. So double the size. They won't leave the dog. Therefore the cost rockets. Considering they cannot stay for 7 days is it fair that we split the cost while they are there and we foot the bill for the remaining days even though we are paying for 2 more rooms we do not need that allows their dog? What is fair? We are hardly flushed and this holiday is a stretch for us as it is
Thanks

You either split the cost 50:50 or they pay for their own separate accommodation for the shorter number of days

This. Is there somewhere you could book two places close together? Or move places after they leave, but I know that’s quite a faff!

ElizaCBennett · 09/06/2024 12:37

If you are not going to benefit from the extra rooms once they leave, the costs should be split per family. If they are not happy with this perhaps they should find separate accommodation close by.

No I don't think that this is fair as you are paying extra for the remaining days. In terms of the remaining days I think that they should pay for the extra costs for the 2 extra rooms for the whole of your stay.

NextPhaseOfLife · 09/06/2024 12:41

Why don't they stay in a travelodge or similar (lots take dogs these days) and use your cottage as a base for meals etc?

HowLoud · 09/06/2024 12:42

Yes either 50/50 or they stay somewhere else!

They need to holiday separately 😂

If it was me I would book separate accommodation. They might want to come, but you don't have to let them.

NeverEnoughPants · 09/06/2024 12:48

What's the difference in cost between what you would have booked, and what you need to book? It seems reasonable that they need to at least cover that.

Shinyandnew1 · 09/06/2024 12:58

I would say, ‘MIL/FIL, we are planning to go here on holiday which costs us £400. You want to completely change the holiday to a place that costs £1000 unless you pay £600, we will be sticking to the original cottage’

How can they argue with that?!

Definitely this. You shouldn’t pay more than what you originally going to pay. Doesn’t matter they’re not staying the whole week, that’s not your concern.

KenAdams · 09/06/2024 13:32

Regardless of how long they can stay, you need to book the larger accommodation for the duration. So they either book their own caravan or pay the full additional cost to upgrade yours.

tiredofsettling · 09/06/2024 21:03

Thanks everyone. I haven't booked it yet but with them we will need double the size because they want separate rooms. So instead of 2 rooms, 4 and so were for dogs. It really narrows the choice down. I don't think there's many travel lodges where we want to go but I'll have a look. Fancy a cottage because we can get the kids to bed then stay up for a glass of wine!
I think you're right though, they either get there own place (which they won't do they want us to do all the leg work) or they pay 50/50.

This. It might be easier for you to book a 2 bed for a week and they book a 2 bed for however many days they require.

FawnFrenchieMum · 09/06/2024 21:30

Yes I think it might easier to find two two bed places near by than a four bed.

ElizaCBennett · 10/06/2024 22:55

Are you happy for them to tag along - company for you etc - or would you rather go just the four of you? The answer to that would determine the next steps I think. Hope you get it sorted without falling out 🤔

Twoshoesnewshoes · 10/06/2024 22:57

I would look for adjacent cottages, or perhaps lodges would be an option? So you can each book and pay for your own accommodation.

TheChosenTwo · 10/06/2024 22:58

I would say they need to pay an equal 50/50 split or if that’s more than they expected they need to find their own accommodation nearby.

SheilaFentiman · 10/06/2024 23:02

Hi MIL

we’ve booked cedar cottage for us. Nearby ash and larch cottage are also free - both dog friendly- here’s the link for you to book!
